“Every human soul… has the challenge of controlling his or her thoughts, appetites, speech, temper, and
desires.
~James E. Faust, The Power of Self-Mastery
Take-Aways of Leading Yourself
🔸What do I want to change in order to improve leading myself?🔸Why does that change matter? 🔸How do I do it?
Step 1: What Area to Lead Yourself In?
Time management Exercise
Academics
Spiritual Language Diet
Relationships
Emotions Work-school-life balance
Finances Sleep
Activity!Identify an area where you want to improve.
“In its simplest terms, self-mastery is doing those things we should do and not doing those things we should not do. It requires strength, willpower, and
honesty.
~James E. Faust, The Power of Self-Mastery
(Mission: Finances of 2011)
Determine what I was spending
Activity!Create a goal that is specific and measurable.
Step 2: Why does this matter now?
Intrinsic rewards: belonging, curiosity, love, fulfilling purpose, growth
Extrinsic rewards: awards, recognition, fear of failure, money, fear of punishment
Both?
“Self-mastery is a challenge for every individual. Only we can control our appetites and passions.
Self-mastery cannot be bought by money or fame. It is the ultimate test of our character. It requires climbing out of the deep valleys of our lives and
scaling our own Mount Everests. ~James E. Faust, The Power of Self-Mastery
(Mission: Exercise of 2015)
Do a 5k each month
Activity!Answer why? And why? And why?
Step 3: How do I do it?
🔸Changed internal dialogue🔸Read/listen to books🔸Talk to successful
people🔸Journal
🔸Make a visible chart🔸Accountability partner🔸Post inspiring
pictures/quotes🔸Always restart
“That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do; not that the nature of the thing itself is changed, but that our power to do is increased.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
(Mission: No Desserts of 2014-current)
Avoid candy, cookies, pies, cakes, cupcakes, ice cream, doughnuts,
etc...
Activity!Identify what prevents you from “restart”. Throw it
away!
What limits will you accept?
