A Step by step tutorial of Magento 1.8 Upgrade. 

We strongly recommend you all to try this upgrade process in a test environment first which would be separate from your current production environment:

Step# 2- Backup Database and Files

Step# 3 Import Database and FilesIn this step, you need to create a new database for your test environment and import the database (backed up in last step) in this new database.

After Database import, copy your extensions, themes, customizations and media files that you backed up in step 2.

 

Step# 4- Some Important Changes and Checks Copy local.xml to magento-install-dir/app/etc Go to your test system base URL in web browser Check if test and production systems are identical

Note: If both the systems are not identical to each other, then try to upgrade again.
