Process of Joomla 3.0 Upgrade
The latest series of Joomla CMS platform is 3.X. In this tutorial, we will be taking of the upgrade procedure where Joomla 2.5 will be upgraded to 3.0.
Before we move ahead, there are few things that are to be considered:
1. Joomla 2.5 is a stable platform and provides long term support.
2. This process is mainly for the upgrade of relatively simpler websites
3. This procedure is strictly for the upgrade to 3.0 and not for 3.1 version.
Now let’s talk about the steps that are to be taken for upgrading Joomla 2.5 to 3.0 Version!
Step 1: Creating a backup
It's not only this upgrade, but whenever you upgrade your website, it is
recommended to take a back of your website. You can use Akeeba Extension to take the backup.
Step 2: Ensuring everything is up-to-date
In this step, you need to ensure that everything in your current Joomla website is up to date. Follow below mentioned points:
Go to Extensions > Extension Manager
Now check that all the extensions are updated
After checking the extension, next task is to ensure that you are using latest version of Joomla 2.5.
Step 3: Check for Joomla 3.0 Compatibility
Now you need to check your system for Joomla 3.0 Compatibility. To do this, follow below mentioned steps:
Go to Site> System Configuration
Check and compare the current settings with recommended settings
mentioned at http://www.joomla.org/technical-requirements.html
Make sure your website meets all the requirements as after that only you
can upgrade.
Step 4: Check for Extensions Compatibility
In this step you need to check that whether your Extensions are compatible with
Joomla 3 or not. For this you need to refer extension developers' sites, documentation, and/or support.
Step 5: Creating Test Website
Once you ensure that all your extensions are compatible, then you need to create
a test website on the same server. Here you need to take the backup of your
database as well.
Step 6: Start Upgrade
Now finally, you need to start the upgrade process. Follow below mentioned steps:
Go to Components> Joomla! Update Now click on “Options” as shown below
Change the Update Server to Short Term Support
Click Save & Close as shown below
Finally, on the test site, click the "Install the update". If all goes well, then you can do the same steps on the live site.
Now click on "Install the update". If the upgrade works well, then you can proceed further with your live site as well.
Important Notes
In case you don't find “Install The Update” option, then you need to go to Extensions (top menu) >> Extension Manager (sub menu) >> Update (tab) >>
Purge Cache (button - far right).
Now test the back end as well as front end of your site.
