A fter the big chill of January, with its cold, snow and wind, February warms the heart, and not only

because of Valentine’s Day. The 36th annual Dogwood Arts House & Garden Show brings spring to life Friday through Sunday, Feb. 14-16, at the Knoxville Convention Center.

House & Garden Show features hundreds of exhibitors offering innovative products, new ideas and deals in decorating, gardening and home improvement.

“We’re excited about everything, particularly the Urban Living feature of the show,” says Alaine McBee, Dogwood Arts director of programs. “It’s a growing and popular addition, featuring beautifully decorated room scenes and environments created by local

Among the other House & Garden Show highlights are thousands of square feet of landscapes in Grand Gardens created by regional designers; a Green Pavilion showcasing eco-friendly, money-saving products and services; Artists in Action; the How-To Stage presented by Scripps

Networks Interactive sponsored by Bandit Lites and the Avanti Savoia Cooking School with Chef Joseph Lowery, consultant to the online gourmet foods importer. Appliances for the cooking school are courtesy of Pattersons Appliances.

Presented by the Knoxville News Sentinel, the House & Garden Show in recent years won bragging rights as one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events.

The magical garden displays like Mark Fuhrman’s railroad exhibit with miniature barns, shacks and log cabins are perennial crowd-pleasers. The landscaper is making his 21st appearance with a mini-railroad tribute to East Tennessee of the 1930s to 1950s.

Karen Massey and Dino Cartwright, who have worked together as House & Garden Show co-chairs for several years, are joined by co-chair Shanna Browning, who previously served as volunteer coordinator.

Browning, a loan specialist at First Tennessee Bank, grew up attending Dogwood Arts events that celebrate the region’s arts, culture and natural beauty. “As I grew older, I wanted to give back because it was such a large part of my growing-up years,” she says.

“I started as a volunteer 18 years ago. It grew to being the volunteer coordinator for the last few years, and to now being a co-chair with Dino and Karen. I just feel that Dogwood Arts showcases Knoxville so beautifully,

Show will display patios, interior rooms including a dining room and a great room, and the use of antiques to reclaim unused spaces in your home.

A backyard patio scene by Prism Pool & Backyard will be complete with patio furniture featuring swivel chairs and deep cushions. The centerpiece will be a Big Green Egg, which reaches cooking temperatures in minutes due to its egg-shaped

design. Other features are precise temperature control, a ceramic surface that doesn’t get as hot as a metal grill and easy clean-up.

“Because it’s ceramic, food doesn’t dry out and stays moist,” says Pat Bright, founder of Prism Pool. “I never really liked chicken before I went to the Egg.”

A great room with cabinets and a fireplace will be part of the design by Master Custom Home Remodeling. “We try to incorporate new and cutting-edge products each year,” says Dawn Steimer, CEO of Master Custom Home.

T here’s so much to see and do at the Dogwood Arts House & Garden Show that it can be overwhelming. Don’t worry –

just relax at the ORNL Federal Credit Union booth.

“We’ll have a TV set up, couches – just kind of a relaxing area for people to come in and talk to us,” says Jessica Emert, director of community and public relations for ORNL Federal Credit Union.

Walking around the convention center can be a jumpstart to dreaming about home and landscape projects. The credit union’s booth is a smart place to begin thinking about how to turn those dreams into reality.

“We’re going to be there with some of our mortgage loan officers and branch staff to answer questions that people may have about financing or how they can go about getting home-equity loans, or if they wanted to redo their back yard or do some landscaping. We want to help them do that,” says Emert.

ORNL Federal Credit Union also will give away a copy of Sycamore Row, the 2014 Dogwood Arts Limited Editon Print by Kathie Odom.

As a presenting sponsor of Dogwood Arts since 2004, the credit union, which has 32 branches across 16 East Tennessee counties, enjoys

taking part in the popular House & Garden Show.

“We speak to hundreds and hundreds of people every

year,” Emert says. “It’s been a good opportunity for our employees to connect with vendors and to connect with the community, even some of their own members who come by and have questions or recognize them.

“It gives us a chance to be out there and to be present and to let people know that yes, we’re in the finance business, but we’re also supporting the community. The Dogwood Arts Festival has a rich history, and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

Emert says credit union employees

jump at the chance to staff the booth.“It’s just a little bit different from

working inside the office,” she says. “It gives them the chance to interact with others that they may not usually see, whether that’s members or even other employees. It gets them involved and connected.”

And, of course, during breaks they can look around and get their own ideas.

“The House & Garden Show is the perfect place to learn new tricks and home pointers,” says Emert.

She’s always happy to work at the booth and hear what people have to say about the credit union, which was founded in 1948.

“It’s great to hear stories of how we have helped members in the past with their home needs.”

Avanti Savoia is revealing the trade secrets of Italian cooking grandmas, so you can create the taste of

Italy at your own kitchen table. Those indulgent, classic Italian

favorites – spaghetti carbonara, porcini tagliatelle and farro pilaf – will take center stage for three days during the House & Garden Show’s Cooking School sponsored by online gourmet food store Avanti Savoia.

“Imagine classic Italian dishes upgraded with modern twists that are authentic, quick and fun to prepare,” says Chef Joseph Lowery. “It sounds too good to

be true, but not when you visit us during the Cooking School.”

Lowery and Chef Karen Crumley, both Avanti Savoia chef consultants and cooking instructors, will demonstrate and offer step-by-step instructions on “how to properly chop your ingredients, cook your sauce and boil your pasta,” explains Lowery. “Once the correct techniques are learned, any recipe can be followed and enjoyed.

“Then we’ll add a modern twist to the classic.”

Fried sage leaves will amp up spaghetti carbonara. The richness of an Alfredo sauce and a wild mushroom medley will infuse the porcini tagliatelle dish. Roasted butternut squash combined

with salt-block-seared scallops drizzled with basil-infused olive oil will create a heavenly taste bud marriage.

Along with the know-how and the recipes, the products, from the gourmet olive oils to Italian pastas, will also be available for purchase at Avanti Savoia’s booth at the show.

What began as a small business eight years ago selling extra virgin olive oil “is so much more today,” explains company President Ben Slocum.

“We sell a variety of high-quality products for the everyday food lover – extra virgin olive oils, traditional balsamic vinegars, truffles, honey, sea salts, gourmet chocolates, risotto, fresh spices and so much more. The newest part of our small, family-owned business is the technique-focused cooking classes at La Cucina, Avanti Savoia’s

cooking school. The House & Garden Show gives anyone new to us a small taste [pun intended] of what we’re all about.”

“Your inner Italian chef will be inspired,” says Lowery of the show.

“Even for those who say “I could never do that.’”

Turning the “can’ts” of budding culinary enthusiasts into “cans” is at the heart of what Lowery and Crumley do.

Lowery, who apprenticed in San Francisco, has 40-plus years of culinary wit. Also a wine aficionado, he blends all the hats of his restaurateur years and his familial roots to create a unique repertoire of the best of the best cuisine. Crumley, a trained sushi chef, is one of Knoxville’s homegrown chefs, a graduate of The Culinary Institute at the University of Tennessee.

The cooking duo believes “cooking doesn’t have to be complicated or fussy.” Lowery says, “The heart of cooking is about family and friends coming together to share the love of food.”

A t the House & Garden Show, Champion Windows, Sunrooms, Roofs and Home Exteriors will focus on the

house part of the equation, but the company will bring a taste for the outdoors along.

“We’ll have a life-size sunroom,” says Carolyn Leditke, creative director at the Champion home office in Cincinnati. “People will be able to walk in and open and close the doors and actually see the quality of construction.”

The 60-year-old company does more than windows and sunrooms; it also does entry doors, garage doors, vinyl siding and roofs.

“We can protect and upgrade your entire home exterior,” says Leditke.

Show visitors can get a crash course in Champion’s history and products, with plenty of hands-on education.

“They’ll be able to touch and test and see our windows,” Leditke says. “Our siding, our windows, our sunrooms, our entry doors – all that will be on display. Unlike trying to pick it out of a catalog, they’ll actually be able to see it and test the quality.”

There will even be a section of roof to examine. Special savings will be offered, along with contests. And visitors can schedule an in-home consultation to see what Champion can do for them.

“Because everything is custom-designed and custom-manufactured,

each project is treated as unique,” says Ben Rosenfield, Champion’s public relations manager. “There’s not a one-size-fits-all product that we make.”

And everything comes with a lifetime guarantee.

“We actually guarantee not only the product, but we guarantee the installation of that product as long as they own their home,” says Leditke. “If there’s ever a problem, they call Champion. Anything they need from the time they purchase a product from us, they’ll just come to Champion, and that gives homeowners huge peace of mind.”

One of Champion’s biggest innovations is its Comfort 365 glass.

“That’s an argon-enhanced glass product,” explains Rosenfield. “It’s

designed to keep the cold out and the heat in or the heat out and the cold in, depending on what season you’re in, and also block a significant amount of UV exposure from sunlight that will fade your carpet, your curtains, your furniture and things like that.”

“We have a really cool demonstration at the show that illustrates the difference between the typical windows in the industry and how our glass even outperforms triple frame,” says Leditke, who notes that Champion’s windows and doors are Energy Star certified in all 50 states.

“The difference in feeling is immediate,” says Rosenfield. “There’s absolutely no way you could mistake our glass for anybody else’s.”

C olorful flowers, ferns, shrubs, trees and even miniature trains turn thousands of square feet

of concrete floor into warm and inviting garden vignettes during the annual Dogwood Arts House & Garden Show at the Knoxville Convention Center.

This year visitors will be able to stroll through 10 gardens, ranging from 600 to 1,000 square feet apiece, and taste spring around the corner.

“Each is uniquely designed by area landscapers to showcase the newest designs for gardens and landscaping,” says Elizabeth Thomas, garden manager for the show.

She notes that the Grand Gardens are strategically placed throughout the exhibit space, offering constant splashes of color, inspiration and hints of spring.

“In essence, the gardens are our floor show! Without the gardens, the show would be devoid of greenery and new life, and we truly could not attract the thousands who come specifically to escape the harsh cold.”

The gardens may include covered decks, paver patios, walkways, ponds and other creative ideas for outdoor spaces, all landscaped with trees, shrubs, blooming flowers, mulch and hardscapes.

As Thomas explains, “Each gardener builds all of this inside the Knoxville Convention Center exhibit hall to bring spring to life for visitors to enjoy during the show.”

The gardeners bring a rainbow of creative talents to their endeavors, from ball courts and putting greens to retaining walls and rain gardens. All aim to help their clients increase curb appeal as well as enjoyment of outdoor living spaces.

Thomas says the Grand Gardens give visitors a chance to discuss their homes and outdoor spaces with many of the region’s most talented landscape designers. This year, the Grand Gardens were designed by Mark W. Fuhrman Complete Landscape Services, Brookhaven Designs LLC, Earthadelic, Landscape Outfitters, Petey’s Landscaping, Plan-It Green Landscapes, Pleasant Hill Nursery, Reno Landscaping Services, Stuart Row Landscapes and Willow Ridge Garden Center & Landscaping.

T rains take Mark Fuhrman and his fans to a magical place, a simpler time in America.

He will bring that vision to life again when he makes his 21st appearance at the House & Garden Show, as his garden will be a railroad landscape tribute to East Tennessee of the 1930s to 1950s.

Miniature barns, shacks and log cabins will dot the landscape in the exhibit, evoking the feeling of Cades Cove and the Smoky Mountains.

The garden railroad will display trains 129th the size of real ones and tracks 1 3/4 inches wide. Fuhrman and crew will landscape

the 1,000-square-foot exhibit with an assortment of miniature plants and a small waterfall.

“Every year we always try to have something different,” he says. “We run both steam and early diesel locomotives. That was the era that steam was ending and early diesel locomotives were starting.”

Furhman, who at 60 owns hundreds of model trains, will share his railroad passion with a display that takes 10 men nearly two days to build.

His specialty actually is large residential landscaping. He is celebrating his 36th year in the business. His Knoxville-based company, Mark W. Fuhrman Complete Landscape Services, installs everything from waterfalls

to retaining walls. However, he’s also built several

garden railroads for people he’s met at past shows.

Fuhrman’s scope extends into the region, as he’s put together holiday garden railroad displays at Dollywood, the Christmas Place in Pigeon Forge and Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge.

As he says, “Doing these public displays is a good way of justifying the hobby.”

Landscape Outfitters to create Smokies sceneHouse & Garden sHowKnoxville News Sentinel, Friday, February 7, 2014 25

By Rebecca FerrarCustom Publishing correspondent

A field that could be part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the inspiration behind the design by Jeremy

Fuson, owner of Halls-based Landscape Outfitters.

“It’s going to go back to the Smoky Mountain look, the outdoor rugged style,” Fuson says.

“What we’re planning is really like being in the mountains. We’ll have a rock bridge where you walk up the bridge across the stream. It’s like a rustic outdoor patio space.”

It will fit East Tennessee well, he says. “It will be like the Smoky Mountains and an outdoor mountain field. It’s what a lot of people want in their back yard.”

In addition to the mountain stream

and bridge, Fuson plans to build other water features.

“We’re going to do lots of evergreen trees and shrubs,” he adds. “We’ll use lots of pink heather. Everybody loves pink heathers because of their color.” The evergreen blooms in the winter and is relatively inexpensive, he says.

Landscape lighting will accent the focal points.

“We’ll have lots of big boulders to give it the feel of the mountains,” Fuson says. “We’ll do multi-elevations of the walkways to give the feel that you’re really in the backyard.”

The pathways will be “mostly a flagstone look. The walkway and patio will be a flagstone look with some accents for style,” he says.

Fuson says his staff puts the Grand Garden together in about a week and takes it down in one day.

A bubbling stone fountain was incorporated into Landscape Outfitters’ grand garden.

Petey’s LandscapingBy Ronda Robinson

Custom Publishing correspondent

T he Grand Garden by Petey’s Landscaping will have two covered decks connected by a flagstone bridge over water, says Robert

“Petey” Ward, owner. The design will create a patio feel that

most customers can afford, says Ward specializes in affordable outdoor projects for working families.

Water curtains falling from the roofline of each deck add to the ambience. The garden scene also will feature a custom-made metal fire pit surrounded by pavers, says Ward, who studied ornamental horticulture and landscape design at the University of Tennessee.

“Our customers are typically working families that just want to add a patio or redo the landscape. They’re looking to

expand their outdoor area to provide more entertainment for their family and friends,” he says, adding, “We stay within their means.”

He designs low-maintenance hardscapes, from a small sidewalk to a complete outdoor kitchen flanked by a fireplace and a pool.

“I’m very approachable. I help the customer design what their dream is.”

The House & Garden Show is a family affair for Ward, who is in his 10th year as a landscape exhibitor at the show. His wife, Kelli, will be on hand, along with their 9-year-old son, Mason, who will be handing out flyers and business cards. Visitors from years past will remember seeing Mason as a toddler in a stroller.

Ward invites guests to drop by his booth and discover new ideas for outdoor living or buy anything on display, from plants to pavers. For more information, call 687-8050 or visit www.peteyslandscaping.com.Petey’s Landscaping featured grass in the spaces between patio pavers.

Plan-it Green to draw from natureBy Chandra Harris

Custom Publishing correspondent

A picturesque natural stone Grand Garden that will echo the idyllic nature of East Tennessee will be

built by Knoxville’s Plan-It Green Landscapes for the show.

To be exact, more than 17 tons of stone will be used to create a raised patio featuring a seating area made of boulders, surrounded by freestanding, intricate stone walls.

“It will be a unique reflection of the natural beauty that surrounds us,” explains landscape architect Brandon Card of Plan-It Green.

No strangers to working with commonplace landscaping materials like concrete pavers and mass-produced stone, Brandon, along with his brother, Jordan, and their father,

Ab, want to showcase the other side of the family’s landscaping business

at this year’s Dogwood Arts House & Garden Show.

“Our Grand Garden will show off the endless possibilities of natural stone creations,” he says.

Many of their custom projects use eco-friendly materials, such as quarried stone, native plants or chemical-free lawn care options.

“We pride ourselves on approaching every project with a ‘green’ mindset,” says Brandon.

“More and more we are patterning landscapes after nature,” he explains, “and not just with the look, but also with the function, by incorporating rainwater harvesting systems that use rainwater for irrigation purposes or dry creek beds that prevent storm runoff and erosion.

“By recommending eco-friendly options through our designs, we are able to explore environmentally sustainable ways that make both the homeowner and earth proud.”

Pleasant Hill’s water feature requires less maintenanceBy Rebecca Ferrar

Custom Publishing correspondent

A pondless water feature and a fire pit with a sitting area will be the main features of the backyard garden created

by Pleasant Hill Nursery at the show.“We’re going to make a small

backyard with a nice little relaxation area using a combination of natural, hardscape and manufactured walls,” says Rick Oakes, owner. “We’ll have a natural stone patio.”

“When you walk into it, you go through a brick paver patio,” Oakes says. “If you go to the right, it’s a semicircle sitting area, and in the center is a fire pit. On the other side will be a relaxed sitting bench with an arbor with music in the background.

“We try to keep it natural and simple.”

Oakes says the pondless water feature will have water underneath the stones and won’t have fish. “It’s mainly for the sound element,” he says. Such ponds are safer for families with children and require less maintenance.

“Most people want the sound without the maintenance,” Oakes says.

The Grand Garden will also showcase some of the trees from the nursery’s tree farm in Maryville, where they produce about 4,500 trees.

The plants in the garden will include hollies, boxwoods, weeping Japanese maples, magnolias and evergreens.Lush plantings and water feature were part of the Pleasant Hill Nursery garden in 2013.

R eno Land Designs intends to cultivate the “green” fingers of children and adults by exploring the whimsical

enchantment of a children’s garden with edible landscaping at the House & Garden Show.

It’s a creative challenge Cindy Reno has been cultivating for some years. With 30-plus years of landscaping know-how, the ornamental horticulturist will create a real-life interactive educational journey.

A labyrinth garden design will encompass a hopscotch-like pathway complemented by an herb garden and cistern.

“It will be a lesson in going back to our roots,” Reno says. “Today, children

seem to miss the beauty of Mother Nature and the role agriculture plays in our lives.”

“This will be a moment to leave the digital world behind,” she says, “and explore the goodness of nature – how plants grow and how rainwater provides much-needed nutrients to sustain a garden.”

Reno is a firm believer that, given the knowledge and right tools, anyone with a bit of time and willingness can create their own sustainable garden. She’s done so in her own backyard with raised beds of fruit and vegetable plants and rows of fruit trees.

“You can truly garden all year around,” says Reno, debunking the notion that the winter months are an idle time. “Something is and can always be growing, and we’re here to teach people how.”

H orticulturist Stuart Row has a lot of experience when it comes to plants, trees, flowers and shrubs. But at this year’s

House & Garden Show, the owner of Stuart Row Landscaping plans to blend such natural ingredients with modern features in creating an outdoor living space in his Grand Garden area.

Located near the entrance to the show floor, Row’s presentation this year will juxtapose an area featuring evergreens, flowering ground covers and boulders with a hardscape sitting area that showcases squared pavers, contemporary furnishings, new lighting fixtures, a fire pit and a water feature.

“We always try to have a few unique-looking items. We try to mix

things up and give attendees different things to look at,” Row says. “We’re combining urban and natural looks with a cool twist.”

He also plans to make use of what he calls “living walls,” vertical installations combining metal construction and plant materials. One

will be incorporated into the rock water feature, where water will cascade into a collecting pool below.

“It’s a different look than what we would normally do,” Row adds.

Row, who has been in the landscaping business since 1982, received a degree in horticulture from the University of Tennessee in 1987 and has been operating his own business since 1995.

One of the business’s unique aspects is that it grows 90 percent of the plant materials it works with on its own 10-acre nursery site near Lenoir City.

“We produce everything from ground cover and perennials to flowering shrubs and trees,” Row says.

He also cites the fact that his two supervisors – both horticulture graduates – as well as the rest of his staff have all been with the company for many years.

W hat do you do when you own a landscaping company, and you’re limited to 1,000 square feet

of space at an upcoming home and garden show? Robert Smiddy, owner of Willow Ridge Landscaping in Oak Ridge, decided to make the best of things by creating a theme that played right into his hands.

“This year, we’ll be showing guests how much they can do with a small space,” says Smiddy, who is participating in his 15th consecutive House & Garden Show. “We’ll demonstrate how people can narrow down their scope and their costs and still do something grand.”

The Willow Ridge display will feature an elevated paver patio

area and adjoining sitting wall. The centerpiece of the presentation will be

an 8- or 9-foot-tall boulder waterfall that drops to a small pond feature.

“Many homes in East Tennessee only have 10 feet or so of useable backyard space before it backs into a steep hillside. So we’ll show how to do something incredible with that kind of area,” Smiddy adds. “We’ll also have a deck section near the water feature to show more possibilities.”

Willow Ridge plans to show off its full capabilities as a design-build landscape firm and retail garden center by incorporating additional elements such as exterior lighting, a space designated for a fire pit and a diverse range of plant life, from evergreens to hardy tropicals like palms and banana trees.

Willow Ridge Landscaping was named 2013 Retailer of the Year by the Tennessee Nursery & Landscape Association and has been included in the group’s top 100 retailers for the past three years.

I f peace were a portrait, it would look like Tranquility Base.

Aptly named, the Grand Garden by Brookhaven Designs

LLC will be a little haven of peace and quiet wrapped in a miniature enclosed gazebo-like building.

“It’s the place you go to play a game of chess,” says John Wech, owner and operator of Brookhaven, “or to get lost in a good book.”

Perched on a stream of water, complete with simulated rain on the roof, “it’s a modern, modified version of a Japanese tearoom,” he says of the plan for his first garden at the show.

“Whether nestled in a small space or anchored within a larger outdoor living area,” Wech says, “this is a

getaway where play, relaxation and conversation” are all that’s on the menu.

Surrounded by edible and aromatic plants and evergreens, Tranquility

Base will appeal to all the senses, which is a feature of most of Wech’s landscape designs.

For example, using a blueberry bush as a hedge can add interest

“and it offers berries you can pick,” Wech explains. “Fruit trees, edible and fragrant plants can be enjoyed in your entire landscape, not just in your garden.”

From backyard refuges to elaborate boulder and rock designs, Brookhaven Designs creates unique, unexpected outdoor spaces, he says.

“From layering to stacking texture to create harmonious multipurpose spaces that bring more of the indoors out,” says Wech, “it flips outdoor living on its head, and gives new meaning to outdoor planning and building.”

The turnkey landscape design firm is backed with Wech’s 30-plus years of landscape architect experience combined with his on-the-ball creativity.

He says, “We’re about bringing your dreams to life.”

F rom kitchens, home additions and sunrooms to decks, hardscapes, irrigation and landscaping,

more than 200 booths will turn the Knoxville Convention Center into an idea factory during the three-day House & Garden Show.

Imaginations are sure to be sparked. And if your home improvement idea bank happened to be low; no more, after visiting with experts galore.

Companies like Healthy Cooking Concepts will have you eating healthier; Fancy Vents will spiff-up your home’s interior with a facelift for those blah and dusty air return vent covers;

and ACME Block & Brick and Cortese Tree Specialists will give new meaning to curb appeal with their infinite outdoor services – enough to make any neighbor envious.

Cindy Moore was looking for a better, more beautiful way to disguise a drab-looking air return vent in her home.

Her honey-do request for her husband, Earl, a skilled metal artisan, was to make a decorative metal vent cover. His result gave birth to her entrepreneurial spirit, as FancyVents was born.

What began in Earl’s workshop now has its own studio near their Nashville home.

With a portfolio of more than 50 unique designs and sizes, FancyVents has been featured

in show homes and television shows and publications such as “Southern Living” and “Everything Knoxville.”

“With a variety of finishes and easy installation,” Moore says, “there is a look for every home, from traditional to modern.”

Offering their know-how on creating traditional or modern curb appeal, ACME Block & Brick will show off the latest in hardscapes which can create an interest in any landscape design, whether it is around a pool, walkway or patio.

Cortese Tree Specialists will be on hand to field questions and offer their expertise to make sure your landscape, particularly trees, are maintained and healthy.

The how-to of healthy eating – fried chicken without frying it – will be un-floured by Chef Dan Galligan and his nutrition guru wife, Medea, of Healthy Cooking Concepts.

Fried chicken without frying it, or vegetable medley without boiling, may seem like a cruel joke on your taste buds. But the Galligans assure that there is no punch line, and they’re serving up food samples to prove it.

Their recipe for health begins in the cookware – Kitchen Craft’s waterless cookware.

The American-made, engineered cookware combines seven layers of metal, which allows heat to spread evenly, explains Dan. A tried-and-true believer of the cookware, Dan saw his own health take a turn for the better after becoming a Kitchen Craft loyalist.

“The craftsmanship combined with the natural moisture – no adding grease, oil or water – of foods produces food that not only tastes good, but is better for you,” he says

And that’s only smidgen of what the House & Garden Show’s buffet offers.

Prepare to be overwhelmed – in a good way.

A rtist Kathie Odom found more than beauty in Cades Cove; she found inspiration for a painting, Sycamore Row, that has been selected the

Dogwood Arts 2014 Limited Edition Print.Odom says she and her husband were

spending a day visiting Cades Cove to paint the panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains when some fluffy white weeds caught her attention and she felt called to a line of sycamores in the open cove.

“There is something strange and mysterious that awakens within me as I open my easel and paint in the outdoors, as in Sycamore Row,” says Odom, who was

photographed by a friendly park ranger with her painting.

A Dogwood Arts committee of six who reviewed a list of artists’ work selected Odom’s impressionist-style oil on linen painting for the Limited Edition Print.

“I personally was drawn to the pieces I saw because of her soft touch with both color and use of light,” says Kathy Slocum, one of the committee members. “As a longtime Knoxville artist, she will also be someone whose work will be sought after by local people, and visitors will find her work to reflect the feeling of East Tennessee that they want to remember and take home with them.”

Odom, who has been a part of the community for 40 years, says she finds it
