What are non-metallic minerals?

Non-metallic minerals are minerals that have no metallic luster and break easily. These are also called industrial materials and are typically some form of sediment. Non-metallic minerals are not malleable.Examples of nonmetallic minerals include sulfur, phosphorus, iodine, carbon, selenium, limestone, dolomite, gemstones, clay and mica.

Mica • It is used in paints as a

pigment extender and also helps to brighten the tone of colored pigments

• In the electrical industry the same as thermal insulation, and electrical insulators in electronic equipment

• Its shiny and glittery appearance makes it ultimate for toothpaste and cosmetics

• The high thermal resistance allows it to be used as an insulator in various electronics

Limestone

▪ Limestone▪ Found in calcium

carbonate & sedimentary rocks.

▪ Used in Cement industry, Iron smelting

▪ Largest producers are Andhra Pradesh, M.P. and Rajasthan.

Hazards of mining

▪ Mining is the process of obtaining materials which can be found under the earth such as coal, precious metals, etc.

▪ Mining comes with a lot of hazards which we will be exploring in this topic

▪ Coal mining is highly dangerous as the residual materials which are present in the air these residues are sometimes found to be toxic and can prove to be fatal and can lead to gas poisoning

▪ Fire damp a substance which can be found in coal mines contains methane which is highly combustible and can explode if any fire sources are lit

Some more info.

▪ the walls in these mining ares is usualy not that stable and collapse due to wear

▪ There is also a dangers for the rocks to in these areas to loosen and fall down as they are not very stable

▪ Coal mining does not only harm human beings but can also have an adverse affect on the enviornment the waste produced from mining activities polutes rivers and fertile areas this makes the water affluent and toxic to consume and the land to become infertile

Why do we need to conserve mineral resources?

Page 10: Minerals and energy resource

Reasons to conserve mineral and energy resources:▪ Widely used mineral resources and energy resources are limited▪ It takes million of years for their formation and therefore, these

resources are non-renewable and non-replenishable▪ Increasing consumption and continued extraction of ores lead to

increasing costs of extraction and a sharp decrease in their quality and quantity.

Conclusion

So, it is most important for us to conserve mineral resources as it is feared that with this rate of consumption the day is not far away when most of the metallic and non-metallic mineral reserves and fossil fuel deposits will be fully exhausted.

How can we conserve minerals and power resources?

A strategy for judicious use of resources is called a resource planning. It is important in India because they are the basis of all economic activities which are the necessary for the development of a nation. Resource planning is a complex process which involves three stages:

▪ To identify the resources across the regions of the country▪ To develop a planning structure endowed with appropriate technology,

skill and institutional set up for implementing resource development plans.

▪ To coordinate the resource development plans with overall national development plans

People can conserve mineral resources by utilizing renewable resources. For example, using hydroelectricity and solar power as sources of energy may conserve mineral resources such as coal. Mineral resources may also be conserved through recycling. A good example is recycling of scrap metal. In addition, the use of new technological methods of mining and the training of miners conserves mineral resources by ensuring minimal wastage during the mining.
