The name “Cannabis” is from its scientific name

“Cannabis sativa L” (or C. sativa)

Or it is generally known as

“Marijuana”, “Weed”, “Pot”, you name it

Chemicals extracted from cannabis are called “Cannabinoids”

which is derived from its scientific name

Briefly about Cannabis

The study of chemical components produced by Cannabis started in 1960’s

Today, it is widely accepted that there are over 70 different types of Cannabinoids in

C. sativa

When did the research start?

There are 2 major types of cannabinoids that researchers are most interested in include:

(1) “Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol” or “THC”

(2) “Cannabidiol” or “CBD”

THC is one of the most important cannabinoids due to its high potency,

abundance, and recreational effect.

CBD is also one of the most important

cannabinoids. It is however less effective

than THC

The abbreviations “THC” and “CBD” are widely used in Cannabinoids research. Therefore, it is particularly important to

know and understand these two terms when study such scientific publications.
