A short history of Sofia University

Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski is the first Bulgarianhigh academic school establishment.

The university was established in 1888, on December 8.Initially, it was High school and had only one department(then, at that time, called Division), namely the Division ofHistory and Philology.

In the academic year 1889/1890, opens the Physics andMathematics division, and in 1892 opens Faculty of Law.

In 1894 was adopted a new law on higher education and bydecree the High school was transformed to University withthree faculties: History and Philology, Physics andMathematics and faculty of Law.

Since 1902 was created the feast of the patron of theUniversity, Saint Kliment of Ohrid, and since the beginningof 1935 Sofia University has officially carried the name of itspatron.

Today

The edifice of Sofia University St. KLiment Ohridski wasbuilt with the financial aid of two donors – the brothersEvlogiy and Hristo Georgievs and is one of the architecturallandmarks of the city of Sofia. Today it is situated in severallocations with buildings of 36 000 sq. m., with 324 premises,65 of them being lecture theaters with 6 000 seats.

Gradually, Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski has becomeone of the most highly reputable centers of science on theBalkans, a full-fledged university of the European type.

Today Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski is the biggestand most prestigious scientific hub in the country.

It has 16 faculties with 107 specific specialties.

A short history of the Faculty of Physics

The Degree Course in Physics and Mathematics starts at theHigher School in the 1899/1900 academic year. It covers afour-year course in mathematics, experimental andtheoretical physics. The number of lecturers is 7, and ofstudents - 72. This marks the beginning of universityeducation in natural and mathematical sciences in Bulgaria.

The Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was founded in1904, after the adoption of the Law on Higher Education. Ithad two major profiles - industrial and pedagogical.

The Faculty of Physics of Sofia University “St. KlimentOhridski” becomes an independent structure in 1963.

Founders of university education in physics

Founders of university education in physics are Prof. P.Bahmetiev, one of the founders of biophysics; Prof. A.Hristov, specialist in surface phenomena in liquids; Prof. N.Pentchev - natural radioactivity; Prof. Karamihailova -nuclear physics and natural radioactivity; Prof. N. Stoyanovand Academician K. Popov - theoretical astronomy; Prof. N.Bonev - cosmogony; Academician L. Krastanov - founder ofBulgarian meteorology; Prof. E. Dzakov - physicalelectronics; Academicians Datsev and Hristov - theoreticaland mathematical physics.

Special tribute must be paid to G. Nadzakov, Full Memberof the Academy of Science, who set the foundations of solidstate physics. We must also mention the contribution ofProf. E. Nadzakov in the field of nuclear physics andexperimental nuclear physics, and Prof. M. Borissov in thefield of solid state physics, acoustic optics and acousticelectronics.

Department of Theoretical physics

Theoretical Physics Department was established more than90 years ago(1921–1924, was founded by professor GeorgiManev-He first theoretically explained perihelion of theplanet Mercury, with the so called Manev’s potential) and isone of the largest educational parts of Faculty of Physics.

Department of Theoretical Physics is the only one inBulgaria in its design and occupation.

Its full name(by documents) is a Department of Theoreticaland Mathematical Physics.

It is the lead department in the Physics faculty.

We intend to provide our students courses at cutting edgesof modern theoretical and mathematical physics.

These are mainly high energy physics, quantum field theory, gravitation and cosmology, condensed matter physics, superconductivity, mathematical and computational science.
