What is Hawking Radiation ?

• Hawking radiation is blackbody radiation that is predicted to be released by black holes, due to quantum effects near the event horizon

• named after the physicist Stephen Hawking• Theoretical argument for its existence was

proposed in 1974

• The energy needed to create the real particles comes from the gravitational field of the black hole.

• Hence, the emission of Hawking radiation reduces the mass of the black hole. As the process continues, the black hole will finally disappear. This is called black hole evaporation.
