A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL PLANT IMPROVEMENTS
CUTTING EMISSIONS WHILE CUTTING COSTS
DuPont employs effective solutions for emission control, waste management and energy usage, to great effect.
SUSTAINABILITY AT DUPONT DORDRECHT
MORE THAN TALK
SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS ARE KEY TO LONG-TERM PRODUCTIVITY AND GROWTH
In force since 2005, the European emissions trading system has meant the Dordrecht site–one of the ten largest DuPont sites–has had to reduce emissions by
Reducing Energy and CO2 Emissions
One of the most significant energy savings projects involves a collaboration with HVC, an incinerator of community waste that is adjacent to the DuPont plant in Dordrecht.
The incinerator produces steam, which is fed into a heat exchanger filled with water. The water heated in this exchanger produces steam which is used in the production processes of DuPont .
HVC came to an agreement with DuPont to sell steam to the Dordrecht site on weekends. For DuPont, it has the dual benefit of saving fossil fuels and money.
Decreasing Water Consumption
Water recycling is another of DuPont Dordrecht’s key environmental policies.
As part of a
to improve production of polymers, the site has more recently put in place a new water treatment facility.
resulting in a total reduction of
20% BETWEEN 2010 AND 20202% EVERY YEAR
Dordrecht:
• Built in 1959• Covering 55 hectares • 880 employees• 150 permanent
contractors• ISO 14001 certified
for over 10 years.

We see sustainable growth as a challenge… We do not believe that sustainability, productivity and profitability are mutually exclusive.” “
Paul Meyers, Site Manager, DuPont Dordrecht
The project provides our city with a good deal. And for DuPont, our collaboration with HVC means getting a step closer to achieving one of our internal sustainability objectives: saving 11 percent of energy by 2015.”

THE SUPPORTING STRUCTURE
In order to institutionalize improvements related to energy and environmental performance, each DuPont site employs a dedicated expert who tracks overall energy performance against corporate and societal standards.
DuPont™ Delrin®, a very impact-resistant plastic manufactured at Dordrecht, has managed to cut fresh water intake by
by improving efficiency at the site’s cooling tower.
This leader then constructs a team comprised of employees from diverse functions throughout the site. Together, they devise and implement specific initiatives aimed at reducing waste, and improving efficiency.
THE RESULTS
Dordrecht won the DuPont internal environmental excellence award in 2008 for a project that increased steam production, reduced the need to cool water and resulted in a significant annual cost saving.
