• Combined program leading to the degrees of ‘Doctor of Medicine’ and ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ (MD/PhD).

• Two years of the Master’s stage of the regular medical degree programme combined with two years of scientific research.

Project: Decision support tool

• Collected patient data from 20 hospitals (≈1400 patients)

Preparation, preparation, preparation??

• In retrospect, I had no specific background nor experience in scientific research

• I did not participate in a JSM honors programme

• And yet, I got the opportunity to publish in Nature Medicine

However, having been prepared better would have saved me a lot of time and effort!

Introduction bij chairman

• Dr. Rick Pleijhuis is currently working as a resident in

internal medicine in the Medical Spectrum Twente. In

January of this year, Rick finished the MD/PhD

programme of the junior scientific masterclass and

successfully defended his thesis on innovative imaging

techniques to complement breast cancer treatment. So

far, Rick has published over ten scientific articles in the

field of optical imaging and is stated as a co-author on a

world-class paper published in Nature Medicine. Today,

he will share his personal story on the ups and downs

that he encountered along the way.

Objective

• Our main objective in this symposium is to

inform and inspire PhD

students, researchers and students and to

provide them with a successful approach

to writing/publishing top papers.

• De doelgroep vrij breed: iedereen die publiceert binnen UMCG en

RUG. Met name Phd’s gaan dit interessant vinden denk ik, ook

vanwege de Elsevier workshop die er in zit. Dus we hopen dat je

een enthousiasmerend persoonlijk verhaal wilt houden over wat je

zoal tegenkomt bij het publiceren. We hebben de blauwe zaal

genomen, dus we verwachten wel veel mensen, eventueel ook uit

het land.
