  3. 3. Biometrics Analysis Although Biometrics only accounts for 3% of Swiss scientific vacancies data is starting to suggest a greater interest in the field from leading companies, particularly within Bioanalytics. In general terms Biometrics has seen a small increase over the last year with a relatively flat 3% monthly growth rate. This has led to a 26% increase in vacancies in the first half of 2015, compared with the last half of 2014 bolstered by a recent rise in Statistics vacancies. Novartis and Roche have had the vast majority of openings over the last 12 months accounting for more than 2/3 (69%) of all vacancies. Novartis on its own has listed half (50%) of all vacancies showing consistent interest across all Biometrics roles with a recent focus on Statistics roles between February and April. Bioanalytics roles have clearly led the way with 44% of vacancies followed by Biostatisticians with 37%. The majority are at a Mid Associate / Manager level, 56%, and Senior Manager level, 27%. Interestingly, however, there have also been a significant number of senior vacancies at Department / Divisional Head and Director / Partner level almost entirely within Bioanalytics. Novartis have been the most active, hiring at all seniority levels, suggesting they are building a new team, or significantly bolstering their existing Bioanalytics capabilities. Biometrics has been a growth area in Switzerland over the last 12 months, with the predominance of roles falling with in the Basel area. Novartis and Roche have been at the forefront of this growth, also leading way is Actelion, whose Biometrics operations has grown with the companies investment into its R&D capabilities. The Swiss pharmaceuticals companies having the benefit of drawing talent globally with the UK, France and Germany providing a strong talent pool of candidates. The key attraction is both the reputation of the Sponsors and the excellent salaries provided which has been further increased by the recently strong Swiss franc. 4. 4. Clinical Analysis Clinical vacancies have accounted for 11% of total scientific vacancies in Switzerland over the last 12 months and with a monthly growth rate of 5.5% is one of the fastest growing. Clinical Operations and Clinical Projects roles have been the big drivers over the previous 6 months. Of these Roche posted just under half (48%) of Operations vacancies with Covance claiming a similar proportion of Projects roles, illustrating the current split caused by the rising influence of CROs. This is further supported by the appearance of 4 CROs in the top 10 companies advertising Clinical vacancies. Covance leads the way coming in at number 4. In real terms, however, Roche and Novartis still dominate the market each accounting for about a quarter of all vacancies. Of Roche vacancies over half (57%) are equally spread across Clinical Operations, Studies and Supply. These are closely followed by Clinical Development, which in terms of the total market has seen the greatest proportion of vacancies over the last 12 months with an 18% share. Novartis has been the biggest advertiser of Development roles accounting for almost 1/3 (29%) of all their Clinical vacancies. Interestingly close to 80% of these are at a senior, Department / Divisional Head or Director / Partner level indicating a possible restructure or the creation of a new department in this area. Here at Clinical Professionals we have found that although Novartis & Roche have a very large percentage of the clinical vacancies on the market, were seeing an increase in clinical hiring from the slightly smaller companies such as Actelion & Celgene. CROs are gaining more momentum in Switzerland at the moment as well, supporting vacancysofts findings of Covance, PRA, Quintiles & Clintec now all in the top 10 companies advertising clinical vacancies. Finally, weve historically found that a large majority of roles fall at or above middle management level, and although this remains true, senior management level roles are becoming even more common. 5. 5. Medical Analysis Medical Affairs and Medical Information vacancies represent about 8% of total Swiss scientific vacancies from the last 12 months. Out of the four areas covered by this report Medical vacancies have seen the greatest upward trend with a Monthly growth rate of 6%, well above the 4% average for scientific roles. This has led to a 64% increase in the total number of vacancies in the first half of 2015 compared to the latter half of 2014. Looking at the data in a bit more detail we can see a sharp increase (71%) in Medical Affairs vacancies in 2015, a quarter of which posted in February alone. Interestingly a high proportion of these (40%) are in senior, Department/Divisional Head and Director/Partner level, positions indicating the potential for strong future growth. Novartis accounts for the largest proportion of the market with half (50%) of their total Medical Affairs and Medical Information vacancies in senior positions and of those nearly are in Medical Affairs. Other companies also heavily investing in this area, with large proportions of their total scientific vacancies, include Takeda (26%), AbbVie (63%), Alexion (29%) and Shire (29%). Even F Hoffmann-La Roche vacancies have remained constant bucking the general drop in their scientific vacancies between the second half of 2014 and first half of 2015. Inthefirsthalfof2015wehaveseengrowthacrossallareasofMedicalrecruitment within Switzerland, it is evident across areas within Drug Safety, Medical Affairs and Clinical Research. Interestingly this is not only with the larger well known pharma companies but also the smaller Biotech and fledgling Pharma/Biotech organisations. We have seen a rise in both permanent and interim vacancies within this function and the indications are that this will continue into the remainder of the year. 6. 6. QA Analysis Quality Assurance comes a close 2nd to R&D with over a quarter (26%) of total scientific vacancies posted in Switzerland over the last 12 months. With a consistent Monthly growth rate of 5% QA vacancies have seen a 27% increase in the first half of 2015 compared to the last half of 2014. Perhaps most impressive is the 84% increase in QC vacancies, which ended up accounting for about a fifth of the total. A good deal of this upward pressure has come from companies who have focused much of their 2015 HR investment in QA roles. These include Johnson and Johnson with close to half of all their scientific vacancies in QA, Baxter Healthcare with 70% and Bayer, Merk Serono and Bachem with around 40%. In real terms, however, Roche is still the main driving force with 29% of total vacancies. of these, in line with the broader average across the market, are at Mid Associate / Manager level, perhaps reflecting the maturity of the field. Interestingly Novartis, although accounting for 8% of the market, is the only company in the top 10 with a percentage of vacancies, when compared to their overall scientific vacancies, below the 26% sector average at only 12%. This may suggest a hiring strategy focused further up the product life cycle as seen by their higher than average numbers in Biometrics, Clinical and Medical. From a staffing perspective, we have seen an increase in QA roles based in Switzerland, as well as the rest of Europe, confirming the data from VacancySoft. Interestingly in the Clinical Professionals salary survey 59% of all QA candidates surveyed said they would be seeking a new role in 2014/15, 18% said they would consider a new role if the package was right leaving only 23% of the QA market confirming they would not be seeking a new position. This may be a resulting consequence of the 27% increase in vacancies in 2015 in the Swiss QA industry compared to the end of 2014.
