Sulfate May look like this on label: Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), ammonium laureth sulfate (ALES), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS) Function: Sulfates are surfactants, a glorified term for detergents, which cause shampoo to lather. The compound has caused birth, reproductive and developmental impacts in animals. Some phthalate compounds have carcinogenic activity in animals.

Propylene Glycol May look like this on label: Propylene Glycol, 1-2-Propanediol Function: Humectant or humidifying and delivery ingredient that keep products from melting in high heat or freezing when it is cold. It also helps active ingredients penetrate the skin. Possible Harm: Elevated or frequent exposure to propylene glycol is associated with dermal irritation and limited edema of the mucous membranes. Under repeated exposure conditions it is irritating to the eyes, nose and mouth.

DEA/MEA/TEA May look like this on label: Diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, ethanolamine, triethanolamine, Lauramide DEA Function: Foaming Agent Possible Harm: Elevated exposures have been associated with irritation to the eyes, skin, nose and throat. These compounds have been associated with limited edema and irritation to the pulmonary system in some individuals.


Petrolatum/Mineral Oil Function: Moisturizer Possible Harm: Coats your skin like plastic, clogging pores and creating a build-up toxins. May cause slowing down of cellular development which can cause premature aging and can lead to cancer and disruption of hormonal activity

The cuticle layers varies according to hair type.

1. Do we apply the smoothing serum on wet or dry hair?

• It can be used on both dry or damp hair – but NOT wet hair. Two of the ingredients – Sunflower and Broccoli seed oil – are polyunsaturated oils that are great as leave-on conditioners but doesn’t penetrate hair easily most especially if it is wet. Make sure to at least squeeze out excess water or towel dry hair before applying for optimal absorption.

2. Can I put smoothing serum on my scalp?

• Avoid applying the oil directly to your scalp, especially if you plan to leave the oil on your hair for more than a few hours. Oil that is applied directly to the scalp and allowed to remain for days will create a pH imbalance. The pH imbalance will impact the balance of the scalp.
