In the 1930’s it was the re-birth of horror films. As well as monsters and mad scientists taking over from the floating ghost imagery in the 1920’s, this was the time that sound was first added into horror; giving it the extra dimension of fear.

Mad Scientists

Overall, scientists in movies have been given a bad rap and they are invariably depicted as insane and power hungry. The audience has often

laughed at the science used in the plots but some of these ideas predicted future scientific developments. Truth is always stranger than

fiction.

1930’s ContextThe 1930’s was the era of the great depression, and this led to

the increased popularity of horror films due the to idea of ‘escapism entertainment.’ Most of the films released in this decade were in the sub genre of ‘supernatural horror’ which made audiences feel as if they could forget about their daily concerns for a few hours.
