20 years ago, Kendell Lang was KPMG Peat Marwick’s Managing Director of Corporate Real Estate. Through this work, Kendell saw a convergence of needs across three major sectors: (1) the life sciences, (2) real estate developers and (3) public capital markets. And so, he pioneered the development of managing real estate through a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) specifically for the life science industry. The goal behind this endeavor was to bridge the funding gap between investment bankers and developers of startups to provide equity capital. Kendell Lang organized the acquisition of the initial portfolio, which ultimately became BioMed Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE: BMR), a Real Estate Investment Trust or REIT. The former grew and evolved into one of the leading providers of real estate and real estate services to the life science and university communities and, in 2016, was acquired for $8 Billion. From an initial concept seeded by Kendell and keen leadership of the management team, it was proven that a special-purpose REIT was the right vehicle to meet the needs of an emerging market.
