During the Civil War, Wilmington was an important stronghold for the Confederacy and was supplied by Confederate Blockade Runners who evaded Union forces to bring goods to the Confederate Army via the Cape Fear River.

The defeat of the Confederate Army at the Battle of Fort Fisher was a key turning point in the Civil War.
