Introduction

Nestled in a valley on the Atlantic

Seaboard of the Cape Peninsula, the

rustic suburb of Hout Bay is

surrounded by mountain on three sides

and the ocean on one. It is home to one

of the Western Cape’s busiest harbours

and is well known for its snoek, tuna

and crayfish industry.

Chapman’s Peak

After being closed for many

years, Chapman’s Peak drive was re-opened

in 2004. It connects Hout Bay to

Noordhoek and Cape Point, and one has to

pay a toll fee in order to use the road. The

drive provides a stunning view of the actual

bay and there are a few lookout points along

the way, enabling you to hop out and take

some pictures of the breath-taking scenery.

Surfing

Hout Bay beach offers white sands and

is popular with locals and visitors alike.

The beach is referred to as

“Dungeons” by the surfing community

and it one of 16 recognized big wave

spots in the world. Hout Bay plays host

to the annual Red Bull Big Wave Africa

surfing competition.

Mariner’s Wharf

The first harbourfront emporium in Africa and the Southern

hemisphere, Mariner’s Wharf is a maritime hub. Take a stroll along the

boardwalk and explore the many restaurants, markets and stores, all

while breathing in the clean, salt air. Try the Wharfette Bistro’s delicious

specialty fish and chips – it’s a must!

Hout Bay Museum

and World of BirdsTwo other worthwhile attractions in the area

are the Hout Bay Museum and World of

Birds. Learn about the history of Hout Bay

and its people at the museum, or go on one

of the weekly guided nature walks in the

surrounding mountains. A great family

outing is a visit to World of Birds Wildlife

Sanctuary and Monkey Park, where the

afternoon can be spent discovering the

numerous species of birds and animals on

display.
