About Kochi

Some people attribute the name tothe Malayalam word 'Kochazhi' or'Small Sea' The local people referto Cochin as Kochi, and this is thecity's official name today. Thecity of Cochin may be said tohave originated as an importantport in 1341 AD when the floodedPeriyar River destroyed a world-renowned port, Kodungallur, justnorth of Cochin and created anall-new harbor in Cochin, whichis today one of the finest naturalharbors on the West coast ofIndia. The population of Cochin is1.5 Million.

Geography and climate

Kochi is located on the southwest coast of India at 9°58'N, 76°13'E, spanning an area of 94.88 ;square kilometers (36.63 sq mi). The city is situated at the northern end of a peninsula, about 19 kilometers (12 mi) long and less than one mile (1.6 km) wide. To the west lies the Arabian Sea, and to the east are estuaries drained by perennial rivers originating in the Western Ghats. Much of Kochi lies at sea level, with a coastline of 48 km.
