Evaluation Question 7

Improvement of ResearchFor my original preliminary product I did little to no research before creating it. When it came to my actual product I did a large amount of research for many different aspects of the film opening. I developed skills and gained knowledge about certain aspects that I now know are vital for the research phase. For my main product the research I completed included Genre Research, Textual Analysis, Primary & Secondary Audience Research and Research Into Institutions. I produced work more in line with professional practice as I had a more detailed understanding of the forms and conventions of a real media product.

Improvement of PlanningFor my preliminary product I did only a small amount of planning including some basic storyboards.

For my final product I created a set of rough storyboards and then created a second more detailed set which I used for my final film opening.

As well as much more detailed storyboards, I did much more planning for my final product in comparison with my preliminary product. I completed much more planning before completing my shoot.

Construction

When I was creating my preliminary product my skills of Final Cut Express were very new and limited. This makes the editing of my preliminary seem very amateur.

When editing my final product I was getting more and more used to the editing programs that I was using and my understanding of the knowledge was much better than previously. In my final product the editing is much more slick in terms of pace, match on action and continuity.

Shots In my preliminary product the different amounts of shots used in it are very limited. There are a lot of stale medium shots and the imagination in it seems very small.

My Final Product is much more improved than this. The shot types are varied much more and it includes long shots, medium shots, close ups, tracking shots, panning shots and more. My knowledge and skills has improved and it shows through the quality of the product.

Locations For my preliminary I used a made a very bad location choice. I used an empty college room to film in which did not match the genre at all.

When it came to creating my actual film opening, I made very selective decisions about my location choices. I made sure that the locations I picked matched with the general horror conventions and matched with the themes and stories I wanted to get across in the film opening.

ActorsThe actors I used for my preliminary product were all that were available for the time and they were not picked correctly. They didn’t suit the roles that I put them in and this showed quite a bit. It took away from the product. Also the actors were not dressed appropriately for their roles.

When it came to my final product I had gained the information on the horror genre conventions and the typical character types thanks to my extensive research. Therefore the actors I chose in my final product fit their roles much more and they are dressed appropriately too.

Sounds For my actual film opening I focused very heavily on the sound design. This included both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds. For my preliminary there was no sound design at all and it was only the sound recorded from the shots.

I developed the skills of using Garage Band to create my detailed soundtrack which I used in my film opening. I also used various websites to search for and use sound effects in my film opening to create a more detailed sound design.
