Electrical Energy Storage: An Issue for Consumers and Power Players

Lately, we are burdened by a few things electricity: The rising costs of our household power rates, electrical hazards and how to avoid it, alternative to electrical energy for our use, energy shortage and outages. At least these are the issues we ordinary citizens face. However, if you ask the electrical utility companies, these issues are secondary concerns compared to the one they are tackling right now: The issue of electrical energy storage.

For the utility companies, the rising costs of electricity will depend on the electricity spot market. With regards to electrical hazards, it is the duty of the users to exercise care and safety. And it is also their duty to explore alternative energy options. With regards to their services, best they can do is to upgrade the facilities to prevent power failure. But on the issue of energy storage, they have not found an answer yet and they are still asking for help. Why does this issue bother them too much?



Imagine a power outage started in Adelaide, next messed up the traffic in Melbourne, cut the lights in Brisbane, and then brought total darkness to Sydney. Picturing the scene, we can feel thousands of thousands of people are left without energy and the country could lose billions of dollars. The scene will not be caused by any disaster or sinister plan to sabotage the economy. It just happens that Australia’s electricity grid was experiencing glitches aggravated by a few pesky trees and computer malfunction. Such a scenario will concern the power players and it has something to do with energy storage.



This scenario has not happened yet in the country, but did take place in North America and the Aussie power players will not afford to let it take place. Lest they can do is to store energy on the electric grids. Electricity could be stored at power station units, along the transmission lines, at substations and in designated locations near users properties. This way, the grids could use the stored electricity to supply to the users.



It sounds like a big project to utility companies and power providers but the idea of energy storage is a good idea to explore because many successful systems manage to serve their customers by keeping a reserve. The country’s grids currently do not have some energy storages systems, which is a concern itself.



Is this a concern for the utility companies and power providers? No, because this is a public concern as we are consumers of electricity too. Why should this be a concern for us?

- Our country’s electricity supply industry is currently unable to store its product (as you should know by now).

- Electricity cannot be stored readily. As soon as it is produced, it has to be consumed.

- Our country has yet to upgrade its grid energy storage.



If Australia has adequate energy storage capacity in its grids, our electricity suppliers can:

- Supply more renewable energy to the consumers smoothly and most of the time

- Enhance the reliability and flexibility of power supply

- Reduce the amount of fossil fuels consumed to operated the grids

- Improve delivery of electricity

- Stabilise the electricity markets and providers

As of this moment, the utility companies and energy producers are still exploring many options to store electricity to serve the public better. This is an issue for all of us.
