SmokingAccording to the survey there are four main reasons that motivate teens to smoke:•All my friends are smokers;•I want to try;•I want to look cooler;•Smoking parents.

Page 4: Youth Problems

As you can see, the main reason is bad influence. This influence is so strong that about 70% of teen smokers say that they started smoking under the pressure of their smoking friends. The second important reason is the example of many adults who smoke in the presence of children at home.

Facts about teen smoking:•95,000 teens become daily smokers;•The rise of the number of smokers among teenagers fell to 90s;•25% of teens aged 12 to 19 are smoking;•Teenage smoking has become one of the most urgent problems in the world.

Smoking at teen age leads to negative consequences.

The physical effects include :•Decrease in growth functions of the organism;•Metabolic disturbance;•Fast fatigue;•Poor immunity;•Intraocular pressure;•Sight violations;•Hearing disturbance.

Mental disorders :•Violations of memory;•Reduction of storing and acquisition of new skills;•Concentration problems;•Nervous breakdowns.

AlcoholThe reasons of alcohol dependence among young people are:

•Heredity•Environment•Unhappy families•Hypercritical guardianship•Availability of alcoholic drinks

The child's body gets used to alcohol several times faster than the adult organism. Children, who have alcohol dependence, become chronic alcoholics. The child, who began to drink alcohol at the age of 12-15, can become an alcoholic during just one year.

Toxic influence of alcohol, first of all, affects the activity of nervous system. Even small doses of alcohol break nervous tissues and impulses.The work of brain is broken. Alcohol drinks have a bad effect of people`s stomach and liver.

DrugsThe reasons of drug addiction among teenagers are :

•family problems;•low level of education;•influence of the people around;•protesting actions against the family;•internal fears, uncertainty;•mental instability;•lack of any occupations, hobbies.

Teenage drug addiction has some general features:• appearance changes;•skin becomes pale or reddish;•reddening of eyeballs;•spasms, joint pains;•behaviour changes;•indifference to study.

Physiological features :

•carrying clothes with long sleeves;•getting depressed;•violation of sleep, meal;•incoherent speech;•violation of coordination movements;•crumbling dark teeth;•unhealthy appearance.

Often the cause of addiction in adolescence is friendship with those who have experience with drugs. Teenagers, who have difficulties in communicating with their families, think that such friends (addicts) understand them perfectly and together with drugs can replace family and school.

70% of young people using drugs are teenagers.45% of boys and 18% of girls, who have ever tried drugs, continue to use them!
