What do you associate with NIHR?
• Funding – clinical research• Trainee funding• Senior investigators• Clinical networks• Biomedical Research centres/units• Infrastructure to support research• Research schools
• Unlikely to think…….. NIHR has its own research team to improve the way we carry out and manage research

Research on Research
Research on Research is an internal programme to inform and improve the management of NIHR research programmes and the projects they fund

Where do we fit into NIHR
• Within NETSCC sits NIHR’s internal research Programme – established in 2007
• Called - Research on Research • Delivered by a same research team within NIHR staff – with external
collaboration• We consider how we can deliver better research and inform the
management of research from funding through to publication. • We are a small team, about 4 full time equivalent researchers.

Discussion 1: Designing a study
Think about the top three issues contributing to research waste
Pick one of these issues and think about how you would research it:- What is your aim?- What information/data would you need?- Where could you find it?- What could you do with your answer?

Challenges – Why are we doing this?

Key considerations
Using and interpreting existing data – Clinical Trials registries
Knowledge and content of data
Collaboration and expertise
Developing systems and learning new systems
Documentation and retrieval – Access to data
Time period of research in relation to guidelines - i.e. CONSORT, SPIRIT
Acceptability of non-reporting and knowing the limitations

Discussion 2: Your RoR
Thinking about your area of work or research:- Where could you reduce waste or add value?- How could you apply the principles of RoR?- Are there data you collect or could collect?- What are the possible challenges you might face?- How could you overcome them?
