‘How to speak well’ with James Hurford Public Speaking Masterclass
Module 1:
Title: The Ice Breaker
Outcomes: Once the learner has completed this unit, they’ll be able to apply:
1. Being at ease — • Overcoming nervousness • Speaking before an audience • Taking the pressure off • Focusing on what you are saying • Making it personal • Building relationships Exercise: Learners will give their first Ice Breaker speech in front of the group. They’ll discover the speaking skills they already have and find out what skills they need.
Module 2:
Title: If people don’t trust you, they won’t listen to you
Outcomes: Once the learner has completed this unit, they’ll be able to apply:
1. Building credibility — • Self presentation • Connecting with people • Posture • Direct eye contact • Building rapport • Professionalism • Building confidence • Inner certainty
Exercise: Learners will be asked to write a 3 minute introduction speech for a member of the group. They’ll be asked to deliver the speech in front of the audience.
Module 3:
Title: Speaking with ‘fire in your belly’
Outcomes: Once the learner has completed this unit, they’ll be able to apply:
1. Enthusiasm — • Being yourself • Using your own language • Speaking from the heart • Letting your personality shine through
Exercise: Learners will be asked to write a 3 minute speech about something they are passionate about. They’ll be asked to deliver the speech in front of the audience.
Module 4:
Title: Taking ownership of the room
Outcomes: Once the learner has completed this unit, they’ll be able to apply:
1. Authority — • Body language • Tone of voice • The message givers • Getting approval • Speaking clearly and slowly • Writing your script
Exercise: Learners will be asked to edit and rewrite their ‘fire in the belly’ speech. They’ll be asked to deliver the speech in front of the audience with authority.
Course requirements: In preparation for the course learners will be required to:
• Prepare a 4 minute Ice Breaker speech.
The Ice Breaker is a speech introducing yourself to the group and giving us some information about your background, interests and ambitions.
Prescribed reading: Learners will each be given a hard copy of How to speak well — to read during the course and to take away with them.
