Need for Electromobility in India

Reduce the carbon footprint A drive towards sustainable means of transport Noiseless transport To cut down on the import subsidy bill for petroleum To improve upon the air quality across the country Air pollution is the fifth leading cause of death in India after

high blood pressure, indoor air pollution, tobacco smoking and poor nutrition, with about 620,000 premature deaths occurring from air pollution-related diseases in 2013

ElectroMobility Plan 2020 - India

India has come up with National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 (NEMMP 2020)

Plans to introduce 6-7 million electric vehicles on the road by 2020 For the same, a mechanism has been developed for speedy decision

making empowered bodies at the apex level in the form of National Council for Electric Mobility and National Board for Electric Mobility

The Department of Heavy industries of India will provide viability gap funding through subvention to support the extra cost of acquisition and operation of these vehicles by state governments or designated bodies.

In the first phase, a pilot project to provide last mile connectivity to the Delhi Metro through electric passenger vehicles, has been approved. All the other states have been brought on board and different states have already appointed nodal officers to co-ordinate with DHI and vehicle manufacturers for the implementation of those pilot projects

Initiatives: E-Vehicles

E-Rickshaws Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill: Established battery-powered e-

rickshaws as a valid form of commercial transport Paving the way for their operation in the country

Solar Electric Hybrid Scooter One of the companies called ETI Dynamics has showcased a

prototype of its solar electric hybrid scooter which comes with a canopy of bendable solar panel

Provides some shade to the rider and also power the vehicle The prototype can be charged on the go and can travel for more

than 50 km on a single charge at a top speed of 45 kmph It can revolutionize the electric vehicle market in India which has

been limited largely to cars

Financial Push to ramp up number of EVs on roads

India  may spend 200 million Euros over the next two years (till 2017) on incentives and subsidies for makers and buyers of electric vehicles as part of an effort to have at least six million electric vehicles on the country’s roads by 2020

Total spend of 3430 million Euros by 2020 The government expects the electric vehicles to help the

country save 2.2 million tonnes (mt) to 2.5 mt of liquid fuel, valued around Rs.14,000-15,000 crore (2000 – 2020 million euros).

Will reduce country’s carbon dioxide emissions by up to 1.5%.

The policy would help facilitate sales of at least 800,000 electric vehicles, led by the sale of two- and three-wheelers

Faster Adoption and Manufacture of Electric Vehicles - India (FAME India)

A detailed scheme “FAME India” (Faster Adoption and Manufacture of Electric Vehicles in India) based on NEMMP 2020

FAME India scheme with an outlay of 113.5 million Euros has been launched for the initial two years – Phase I (2015-17)

The scheme would cover the following areas: Cities under “Smart Cities” initiatives. Major metro agglomerations – Delhi NCR, Greater Mumbai,

Kolkatta, Chennai, Bengaluri, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad. All State and other Urban Agglomerations/Cities with 1

million+population (as per 2011 census) Cities of the North Eastern States Will cover all vehicle segments i.e. two, three and four wheelers,

cars, LCVs, Buses etc and all forms of hybrid(Mild/Strong/Plug-in) and pure electric vehicles.

Pilot Projects under consideration by Department of Heavy Industries

Running pure electric vehicles (7 seater) in the last 2 Kms at Taj Mahal (Agra)

Pure Electric 2 wheeler vehicles for home delivery (Dominos, KFCs etc)

Pure electric 3 wheelers/small 4 wheelers for fruit and vegetable distribution and garbage disposal etc.

Electric cars for taxi fleets, corporate hire and rental scheme use etc.

Last mile connectivity from metro stations. Hybrid and electric buses for public transport and creation of clean

air islands for selected areas

Local manufacturing of vehicles will lead to employment generation direct (job creation of 60 to 65 thousand + indirect job creation in components like battery, motors, power electronic devices etc. totaling 0.25 to 0.3 million)
