The American civil war in the age of Nationalist Conflict

• Andre M. Fleche from The University of North Carolina Press Chapel Hill has researched the revolutions around the world between 1776 and 1861. “These wars and revolutions seemed to present different models of republican nation-building and offer alternative definitions of what democratic revolution could entail.” These Revolutions led up to and had a great influence on the American Civil War. Each revolution looked at between this time was a revolution of a government. The government change was either a change to a more democratic government or a change from monarchy to republicanism. This change was made by countries around the world because of America’s revolution against Britain. This shows that America had a huge impact on the world. These revolutions also had a great impact on America. After America had seen all the revolutions in Europe they were further convinced that they needed to make a change. They were not democratic enough because they still had slavery. America influenced the governments of many nations around the world between 1776 and 1861, while those nations and their revolutions also influenced America .

• The American Revolution was the start of a wave of revolutions during the 19th century. A painting by John Trumbull of the British surrendering shows the American’s victory. This victory inspired other nations to revolt against their monarchies and start republican governments. This painting begins the slideshow.
