Rwanda through AfDB figures

New mobile application for Reunion Island Tourism

In a new statistical report by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Rwanda’s recent work stands out prominently. Presented by the director of AfDB’s statistics department, Charles Lufumpa, the publication titled “Tracking Africa’s Progress in Figures” looks at past key trends that defined the continent and those that shape its future.

In general terms, the report shows that African economies have scored exceptional rates of growth driven by strong domestic demand, improved management of economic affairs, a growing middle class, and increased political stability.

“With Africa’s population expanding rapidly, from around 1 billion today to an estimated 2.5 billion by 2060, we will have a young and increasingly urbanized workforce, which presents an opportunity to reap a demographic dividend,” Lufumpa said in his presentation.

“Seizing that opportunity will depend on access to education and skills, the quality and scale of public investment in infrastructure, and the associated private investment in business and jobs,” he added.

However, the report warns that the impressive performance of

certain countries is overshadowed by other countries’ poor results.

“Madagascar, for example, has significantly reduced its adult mortality rate. Liberia, Rwanda, Algeria, and Burkina Faso also performed remarkably well. However, Swaziland and Lesotho registered a twofold increase in their mortality rates between 1990 and 2011,” the report states.

The report further shows that 97 per cent of pregnant woman in Rwanda receive antenatal services, which is way above Africa’s average of 74 per cent. The report says that over 18 million African women still do not give birth in a health facility.

On average, the time required for business start-up reduced on the continent by nearly half in the past seven years, Rwanda stood out for making major reforms in property registration programmes, improving cross border trade and strengthening investor protection. Other countries that scored highly in this category include Burkina Faso, Burundi, Egypt and Mali.

Rwanda also falls in the category of countries with relatively high rates of poverty reduction, along with Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, Mali and Uganda. Those that suffered acute increase

in poverty levels over the past few years include Chad, Ivory Coast, Egypt, and Zimbabwe.

On gender development, Rwanda has an unprecedented 64 per cent of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies held by women, the report says. Seychelles, Senegal, and South Africa also stand out in this category with more than 40 per cent female representation in Parliament.

Countries where women have less than 10 per cent of parliamentary representation are Egypt, Comoros, Swaziland, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Benin and Democratic Republic of Congo. Yusuf Rurangwa, the Director General of the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda, welcomed the report, saying that harmonised statistics throughout Africa will make development goals more realistic.

“Countries must exploit advanced research modules in order to cut cost of data storage. Private businesses must also improve the way they use national data to better understand opportunities and risks in investments,” Murangwa said.

Rwanda’s main challenge according to the report lies in its significant reliance on aid.

The second edition of the Kenya Hospitality Trade Fair and the parallel Hotel Summit

East Africa ended at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in the heart of Nairobi. Exhibitors expressed satisfaction with the business contacts made, in spite of the present challenges Kenya’s tourism and hospitality sector faces. Visitors to the exhibition in particular appreciated the cooking

demonstration sessions with Kenya’s first celebrity chef, Ali; Chef Raphael; and chefs from the Sarova Stanley Hotel, who thrilled the crowd mobbing the cooking stations with mouth-watering dishes being prepared in the space of an hour; cooking instructions, of course, were provided and demonstrated.

Other similar events across the three days the trade show was

open, comprised of whiskey tasting sessions, organized by Kenya Breweries which is owned by East African Breweries, which in turn is a Diageo subsidiary, and tea and coffee tasting sessions were also available to exhibitors and visitors courtesy of Kericho Gold and Dorman’s Coffee. Domaine Kenya made an impact with their wine-tasting sessions, while PERAK, the Pub and Restaurant Association of Kenya, operated a “Bartenders & Mixologists” pavilion which during demonstrations was also packed to capacity.

The Hotel Summit in a packed program, showcased a number of international speakers and presenters discussing the entire range of challenges investors in the hospitality industry are faced with, from planning over feasibility studies, to financing and staffing, and last but not least, to implementing green operating standards, leading to lively discussions and interactions during the coffee breaks.

Wassupafrica 03New energy incentive for industrial park investors

Minister Marthinus Van Schalkwyk, the Minister of Tourism of South Africa, and Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, met on the sidelines of Indaba, the tourism trade fair of Africa that is held annually in Durban in South Africa.

Both ministers were accompanied by a high-level delegation from their respective countries.

South Africa and Seychelles are two countries that continue to enjoy friendly ties, and Ministers Van Schalkwyk and St.Ange used the opportunity of the Indaba meeting to review areas of cooperation between South Africa and Seychelles, and how the different joint actions undertaken between them has fared.

The historic UNWTO (UN World Tourism Organization) and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) that will be bringing together for the first time ministers of tourism and ministers of transport, was discussed as this meeting is set to be held in Seychelles. The UNWTO Commission for Africa (CAF) meeting, also in Seychelles in April 2015 at the same time as the island's annual Carnaval International de Victoria, was also discussed. South Africa, through KwaZulu Natal, was this year a co-host of the carnival in Seychelles, and the benefit of such a partnership was also discussed.

Minister Van Schalkwyk and Minister St.Ange both felt that the continued cooperation between South Africa and Seychelles needed to be further developed. The two Ministers signed a MOU a year ago paving the way for increased cooperation between South Africa and Seychelles.

Information received while in Kenya shows a further rise in passenger numbers for Entebbe International Airport during 2013, with figures for the first time rising above the one million mark with 1,025,391 compared to 964,274 the previous year. Domestic passenger numbers nearly doubled, the first time in over a decade that figures have risen again after a constant decline in local passengers. Here, the 2013 figure reached 21,448, up from just 13,464.

The figures were presented to the 9th Joint Transport Sector Review earlier in the week in Kampala by Dr. Rama Makuza, CEO of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority.

Also up were aircraft movements overall from 22,370 to 23,091 indicating that the number of flights has risen besides airlines switching to larger aircraft to cater to growing passenger numbers.

The capital Kampala, besides access to the international airport in Entebbe – a new four-lane highway is being constructed to cut down on traffic delays – can also use the Mission Aviation Fellowship owned Kajjansi airfield, located just 15 kilometers outside the city, which is also the home base of the Kampala Aero Club and Ndege Juu. It is from there that the Aero Club operates its domestic charter and scheduled coach services, while Aerolink, a sister company to Air Kenya, operates their domestic flights and charters from the main airport in Entebbe.

Uganda breaks record

Industrialists are being encouraged to move to the area. Industrialists are set to

benefit following a decision by the national energy utility to waive electricity connection fees for those seeking to set up industrial plants in the new industrial park located in Gasabo District.

The decision was announced by the Energy Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA). Aimee Uwanyiligira, the head of electricity commercial unit at EWSA, said the waiver aims at attracting more investments, thus spurring economic development.

“We were being charged between Rwf4m - Rwf5m for installing a 500KV transformer but this has been revised to no cost,” she noted.

She added that the decision also aims at encouraging industrialists to move to the free economic zone. Uwanyiligira added that even charges for those intending to establish industries outside the free economic zone had been slashed.

“For instance, establishing a 5.3km medium voltage line from the national grid before was costing about Rwf212 million, but now it’s just a flat fee of Rwf20

million,” she said.Ntare Karitanyi, the Director

General, of EWSA said the move will help boost employment since more industrial establishments will be attracted to invest in the area.

“It will also present industrialists with an opportunity for expansion,” she said

Claudine Mukeshimana, the Executive Director of Rwanda Association of Manufacturers, welcomed the move saying it would help reduce costs of production for industrialists. She, however, called upon the Government to reduce power tariffs as they greatly reduce the turnover of industrialists.

“The power utility urges us to carry out our operations in the night, as this comes with low electricity charges, but it has proven impractical, since you have to supervise workers till late in the night which is costly,” Mukeshimana said.

She also called upon EWSA to work towards reducing power blackouts, saying they cause enormous losses in stalled work.

“Our members have also complained of occasional faulty power connectivity, which usually

According to Yedder “President Paul Kagame has set a powerful benchmark of excellence for future generations of leaders to follow.”

In an enlightening speech, President Kagame attributed the award to Rwandans who have sacrificed in many ways to put Rwanda where it is today.

“Rwandans have made me the kind of leader that I am and given me the strength that has added up to taking our country forward. As we celebrate, we must think about doing more and sustaining what we have achieved,” Kagame said.

Alex Ruzibukira, the Director General of Industry, Small and Medium Enterprises at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, noted that the move is an incentive for industrialists to shift to the special economic zone before the 2016 deadline.

“Nine out of 14 factories have moved from Gikondo wetland to the new economic zone in Kigali, we hope we this development will

encourage the remaining firms to move,” Ruzibukira said.

“Basic infrastructure, including water, sewage, fibre optic cable and road network are already in place at the Special Economic Zone in Kigali, so subsidising electricity connectivity is a huge complement,” he added.

Ruzibukira also disclosed that the construction of eight more industrial parks is underway country wide.

that Rwanda will go forward to work with AfDB in pursuit of determinations that will make Africans prosper.

According to African Banker Magazine, over the years, the quantity and quality of entries has been increasing which attests to the readiness of African banks and financial institutions to showcase to the world the good work they have been doing.

ATTRACTIVENESS OF THE ECONOMY

The attractiveness of the “Country of the upright people” is the result of

Open to the countries of the sub region with which it shares six borders, Burkina Faso has got a strong regional identity strengthened by seasonal mobility of the Burkinabe, the establishment and integration of important foreign communities, its membership in all the regional organizations for regional cooperation, and the political choice of the authorities to promote integration.

Burkina has been able to take advantage of its position as West African hub by developing performing logistic functions in the areas of road infrastructures, telecommunications and service.

Burkina faso, the Land of Honest People is a french speaking, West african country, formerly known as Upper Volta. it is a landlocked country which borders ghana, mali, ivory coast, togo, Benin and niger. the country is known to have heavy deposits of minerals such as manganese and gold and also resources of copper, iron ore, cassiterite (tin ore) and phosphates. Uganda’s quasi-national airline, Air Uganda, is the latest airline to join AFRAA,

the African Airline Association, according to information received from the company’s CEO, Cornwell Muleya. Already active as a keynote speaker at the recently-held 3rd Convention for Aviation Suppliers and Stakeholders in Nairobi, the membership of U7 in Africa’s premier aviation body has opened the door for the Ugandan carrier to join such winning initiatives as the joint fuel purchasing program and will be able to participate in the next big scheme, the joint ground-handling initiative. During the Nairobi meeting, AFRAA mentioned over US$30 million in savings for fuel purchases that

participating member airlines made last year, a very significant amount of money considering the volatile nature of the prices of Jet A1 aviation fuel.

Said Cornwell Muleya in his communication: “Air Uganda became a full member of AFRAA in May 2014. This is part of our broad strategy to participate fully in the industry associations as we continue to grow the company and business.

The membership gives us access to the full range of benefits including the joint fuel purchase scheme, the lower training costs organized by AFRAA and IATA, joint ground handling, coordinated lobbying for aviation policy changes etc.” Cornwell went

on to confirm that Air Uganda had already placed an application for full IATA membership and admission to the world airline body is expected to be confirmed in due course.

Air Uganda will also be present at the upcoming Routes Africa meeting in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe in June this year where Cornwell has been listed as one of the speakers of the event.

The airline, which took to the skies in late 2008, is presently fully owned by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, in short AKFED but talks are progressing with the Ugandan government, following an agreement between His Highness the Aga Khan and Ugandan President Yoweri

Museveni to have the Government of Uganda acquire a strategic share in the airline, then making it formally the flag carrier of The Pearl of Africa.

IOSA certified Air Uganda operates a fleet of 3 CRJ200 jets and serves the wider region with flights from Entebbe to Nairobi, Juba, Bujumbura, Kigali (in codeshare with RwandAir), Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi and Mombasa and notably Mogadishu. It is understood that a fleet renewal exercise is being planned to acquire newer and larger jets, so don’t miss those news and watch this space for breaking and regular news updates from the Eastern African aviation scene.

At present, the main priority and challenge for the country is to enhance labor productivity, to create decent jobs and diminish underemployment that is estimated at about 58 percent (63 percent for youths). Rugwabiza Minega Leonard, chief economist at the Ministry of Finance and

It is timely and will strengthen its efforts to implement medium-term strategy for economic development and poverty reduction - the EDPRS 2.”

The programme will prove profitable mainly for the young women and men. Presently, 40 percent of registered entrepreneurs are women who signify 52 percent of the country's population. Rugwabiza praised the bank's mounting partnership with the government of Rwanda especially in backing its development journey. He expressed, "This program shows, once again, the close ties between the Bank and Rwanda. Africa has long been deliberated a sleeping giant with various and abundant natural resources and a large population. Recent drifts in Africa

in expertise and state-of-the-art technology are making a boom on the continent. Africa has been undergoing world leading rates of growth.

Africa is switching for the better. In the past decade, Africa’s growth rates have silently been coming on those of Asia. There is no doubt to accept that technology is the touchstone of growth and expansion.

Now, as mobile technology disseminates across Africa, groundbreaking techniques of using technology are renovating virtually every sector of life. In my opinion, it is now recognized that, Africa is a continent encompassed of diverse countries, each of which is emerging at a different rate.

No doubt, Africa has went through an unbelievable boom in mobile phone use over the past decade. In 1998, there were fewer than four million mobiles on the continent. Today, there are more than 500 million.

“Africa is better positioned to adopt the next generation of technology than anybody else because it’s not tied by a legacy system...the cost of moving forward is much cheaper,” says James Mwangi, CEO of Kenya’s Equity Bank, whose bank became the first in the world to offer a completely mobile bank account.

It is interesting to note that only 10% of Africans have access to the internet, the lowermost percentage in the world. Yet, 50% of Africans have mobile phones and their insight is increasing swiftly. This signifies that mobile technology is the biggest podium in Africa, and can approach a wide range of income groups.

I have observed the marvelous gains telecommunication has carried to Africa, exclusively through wireless expertise, which has translated the businesses into mobile and global enterprises. In 1995 there were a projected 600,000 mobile phone subscriptions in Africa. A decade later this number rose to 87 million and in 2012 it was estimated that there were 735 million mobile subscriptions on the continent. This makes Africa currently the fastest growing and second-largest market for mobile

People often don’t have a credit history in Africa. If you have three months of top up on a phone, that’s a credit history. Mobile is going to completely transform banking in Africa.

I must spotlight the motive why mobile penetration is bringing about foremost modifications for africa is for the reason it does not necessitate the identical level of infrastructure as previous forms of technology

phones in the world. In August 2012, the region’s top selling handsets

included the Nokia Xpress Music 5130 and Samsung’s E250 handset. Both are 2G devices, which support GPRS and EDGE data connectivity. Such feature phones have shaped the bulk of handset sales since 2011; Nokia’s Asha range is one sample of this “smarterphone” range, as the firm calls it. These handsets come in QWERTY or touchscreen form factors and the main stream are restricted to GPRS and EDGE, although the 300 series also supports 3G network connectivity.

According to a partnership study done by mobile phone firm Ericsson and Columbia University’s The Earth Institute, raising mobile phone penetration by just 10 percent augmented Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by around 1.2 percent in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Tanzania. As mobile penetration endures to nurture in these and other African nations, the leading upsurges in connectivity and the accessibility of data will deliver formerly extraordinary occasions for development and invention all over the technology sector and the continent’s key economy.

I must spotlight the motive why mobile penetration is bringing about foremost modifications for Africa is for the reason it does not necessitate the identical level of infrastructure as previous forms of technology. By eradicating the requisite for luxurious

infrastructure investments, mobile technology is opening up the continent in ways never thought to be antecedently thinkable.

It is by this time becoming an indispensable instrument for small businessmen all around the continent. For example, mobile banking is catering critical amenities to businesses positioned in areas deprived of the infrastructure for brick-and-mortar banks. According to IBM assessments, by 2015, total African mobile money transfers are predictable to surpass US$200 billion, which is estimated to

account for around 18% of the continent’s GDP. And this number does not comprise the fringe assistances to efficiency that mobile banking earns, such as eliminated time wasted through extreme travel and queuing. Google, for its part, strategies to sell 200 million of its Android phones in Africa and it is likely that by 2016 there will be a billion mobile phones on the continent.

Not only this, by linking remote areas, mobile phones permit farmers to retain a record of price variations in crops and fundamentals, allowing them to get the finest transaction when buying or selling. It also permits them to access more buyers and sellers, stopping a local monopoly from developing.

As estimated by World Bank, the African economy has been growing at a rate of about 5 per cent a year for the past decade and, it is foretold to cultivate more swiftly than that of any other continent over the next five years. The thriving and prosperous information and communications technology sector, and predominantly the speedy progress of mobile communications, is accredited with having driven much of this extraordinary economic enlargement.

There is qualm that mobile phones have transformed the African continent in diverse fields like Banking, Activism, Education, Entertainment, Disaster Management, Agriculture and Health.

In the period of 10 years, mobile phones have altered African nations more expressively than any development from the time after their liberation from colonial powers. Half of Africa's one billion population has a mobile phone – and not just for talking. The power of telephony is building a new enterprise culture, from banking to agriculture to healthcare.

The country shares a border with Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique and is one of Africa’s smallest nations.

It is the combination of gorgeous landscapes, captivating wildlife, the fascinating Lake Malawi, and rich culture that pool to make this small country such a delightful place to visit.

Welcoming PeopleThe Malawian people are, without doubt,

its extreme asset: friendly and hospitable. Every visitor is met with a smile and the warmth of the welcome is honest and long-lasting. Alongside a number of places of specific cultural and historical interest, and all travel will include some part of cultural understanding as communication with local people is very much part of any stay.

LakeThe ornament in the crown of the

country’s tourist charm is Lake Malawi. Even though totally landlocked, Malawi is not deprived of its “inland sea”. This massive body of freshwater fringed by beaches of golden sand is not only a picturesque paradise but it provides water sport chances for those looking for something beyond sun, sand and swimming.

Scenic BeautyMalawi has a substantial diversity of

striking landscapes. The highest peaks in Malawi touch 10,000ft (3 000m) while the lowest point is barely above sea level. This range of altitudes in a small area help to make the scenery of Malawi one of the most diverse in all Africa. It is usually a green, lush country, with tables, plateaus, forests, mountains, plains, escarpments and melodramatic river valleys. The range of scenery is a chief attraction to visitors and many of the highland areas and forest reserves have good accommodation options, and profusely of outdoor activities available.

Amazing WildlifeOne can see baboons, antelope, and

hyrax, as well as almighty birdlife, and the lake offers countless prospects for sporting activities like kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba-diving. The lake contains a number of small islands, all located in “Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty,” and although preserved in their natural state, some of them have been developed for eco-tourism.

Utopia of FlowersMalawi’s largest park, Nyika National

Park, has got to be one of the most prominent destinations in Africa. It is a utopia of flowers, counting ground orchids, proteas, irises, and is home to vast herds of eland, the largest of the antelope. Horseback safaris are offered

PURITY AT THE HEART OF

MALAWI

in the country, and there is no adventure like that of riding through a herd of zebra or roan antelope. The eastern edge of the plateau forms the wall of the Great Rift Valley where visitors may hire a mountain bike or hike all the way down to Livingstone, which is the best way to escalate Nyika’s scale without overlooking its delicate detail.

Gentle WalksVisitors can drive around the entire foot of

the mountain in a day or experience it more intimately by climbing and camping on the slopes, taking comparatively gentle walks or attempting some more demanding climbs. Camping equipment and the services of a guide can be hired.

Malawi is known as “The Heart of Africa” thanks to its attractiveness and diversity of lifestyles, cultures and sceneries. Here visitors will find the African Great Lake of Lake Malawi in the Great Rift Valley system. It is Malawi’s range of magnetisms that is its utmost strength. Whilst Lake Malawi rules the country, this is not a country of a singular charm.

Radeecal Communications is well-recognised in India. Now, while stepping in Africa, whatis your vision and mind-set for the upcoming Exhibition: Agritec Africa scheduled to be held in Kenya and how do you anticipate it as a boom for agriculture sector?

Radeecal Communications is specialised in organising Business Trade Fairs in India from last many years. We have our team who works in different areas of Business Trade Fairs/ Exhibitions i.e. Business Promotion, Marketing & Promotion of the event, Back office management, Fabrication, etc. So we will surely make this event a successful exhibition in Agriculture of Africa. We are interested in making benchmark in Kenya by organising well managed and organised Agricultural Exhibition and Conference.

Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. Of Kenya is supporting Agritec Africa as Organising Partner under which visitors from 27 countries of Africa will visit this exhibition so this could give a super boost up to our valued Exhibitors and I am sure they’re eagerly waiting for this Exhibition.

Brief us about the participants of AgritecAfrica and what benefits Agritec Africa will cater to its audience.

What are your strategies to make it successful among the delegates?

Agritec Africa covers many fields of Agriculture i.e. Plasticulture, Irrigation Technology, Tractors, Agri Machineries, Pipes & Pumps, Seeds, Agrochemicals, etc. We have participants from various sectors so it wouldbe one stop solution for the visitors. Visitors want various participants from sub-industries of Agriculture Sector as well as new improved technology, we have tried to maintain variation in participants and also good names of companies are

participating with us in Agritec Africa. Agritec Africa two days conference is the point of attraction to our delegates as renowned speakers from Kenya and leading industries will give presentations on Technological topics related to Agriculture.

As Radeecal Communications is marking its presence enormously, please enlighten us about the upcoming India-Africa focussed

events that your company would be organising?

Agritech Asia is our flagship event which we organise in India in every September. Last edition of Agritech Asia was a huge success where there was total 250+ participants and total visitors figures crossed 1.5 lacs.

We want to organise Agritec Africa on yearly basis as we would like to give new destination to our esteemed clients. Also Kenyan Govt. Is supporting us in organising this so it would be a great chance for us to expand Agritec Africa in

other countries as well.

Agriculture sector is conceived as the backbone of Kenya’s economy and central to Kenya’s development strategy. How in your opinion Agritec Africa can support its vision of creating a globally competitive and prosperous nation?

This is true that Agriculture Sector is the backbone of Kenyan’s economy

and Sugar is the favourite crop of Kenya. Agritec Africa created platform where we invite companies to showcase their latest innovations and technologies which can be adoptable in Kenyan farms. With the help of Agritec Africa, many companies are interested to set up their facilities in Kenya, which is also a good sign for Kenyan Agriculture Sector. We are very much sure that this would be an enormous idea for African Sector to adopt new Techniques.

How is Agritec Africa distinct from other agriculture-oriented events? And, why you think it will mark a new chapter in the business environment of Africa?

Yes there are many Horticultural and Floricultural Events are taking place in Kenya however we have notices no event is being organised on core Agriculture sector. We want to distinguish core Agriculture from its Sub-Industries. Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. Of Kenya itself taking interest in Agritec Africa as they would like to see such Core Agricultural Platform in Kenya. They have formed a Committee – Local Planning Committee (LPC) who are taking care of minutes of local promotion, Conference Speakers, Conference Delegates and Conference Topics. Involvement of Govt.
