The first World War, which was going to continue for four years, broke out in 1914 when the Hungarian heir to the throne was killed by a Serbian student.

As a result of the defeat of the Ottoman Empire and its allies, very unfair treaties were signed. On 30th October 1918, the Ottoman Empire signed the

Treaty of Montreux which led to the occupation of Turkish lands .

On 10th August 1920, the Ottoman Empire had to leave its invaded lands due to the Treaty of Sevres.

In order to save Turkish people from their plight, ATATÜRK started the movement of national

independence on 19th May, in Samsun.

Turkish people trusted in Mustafa Kemal and they did not give up their great battle for their independence.

Atatürk had to face hard times during the War of Independence but with the support of his people, he did not yield to any difficulty. Having won the independence of Turkey in the end of a three-year- struggle, Atatürk proclaimed the Republic on 29th October 1923.
