The Road To Revolution
Proclamation of 1763 After the French and Indian War,
Native groups started attacking settlers in land that used to belong to France
Because of the war, England couldn’t afford to protect the settlers.
King George III made a law that nobody could settle west of the Appalachians
This was called the Proclamation of 1763.
Quartering Act 1765 To keep peace with
Native Americans, England decided to keep 10000 soldiers in the colonies
This required colonists to house or quarter English soldiers and provide them with supplies.
Stamp Act 1765 To make money to pay off F&I
War debt, the English passed a law called the Stamp Act
All legal and commercial papers had to have a tax paid on them.
You proved you had paid the tax by having a stamp put on the paper.
Colonial leaders like Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty protested with boycotts.
Townshend Acts 1767 Took away New
York’s ability to govern itself
Placed taxes on glass, lead, paper and tea
Boston Massacre 1770 Colonists in Boston
provoked British soldiers by throwing snowballs at them and calling them names
The British fired into a crowd
5 colonists were killed
The Americans used the incident to show how bad the British were (propaganda)
Boston Tea Party 1773 Colonists were
boycotting tea because of the taxes.
The tea sat on ships in Boston Harbor
The Sons of Liberty threw the tea into the harbor to protest the taxes.
Intolerable Acts 1774 Closed port of
Boston|
Suspended Massachusetts legislature
Imposed Military Rule on all of Massachusetts
First Continental Congress Colonies agreed to
work together
Representatives from 12 of the 13 colonies met
Called on King to stop unfair treatment
Lexington and Concord 1775
British rode to Lexington and Concord to take colonial weapons and arrest leaders
Colonial minutemen met them and they fought
British 273 dead. Colonists less than 100.
Shot heard round the world
First battle of Revolutionary War.
