First SparkOctober 3rd: migrant boat catches fire, sinks less than one kilometer from the shores of Lampedusa, Italy.
Over 300 migrants seeking asylum dead.
Local ships avoided the stalled boat until the crisis got out of hand; only then did the coast guard intervene.
Why no one Helped
They feared prosecution.
Lampedusa is a bottleneck for incoming immigrants to Europe, both legal and illegal.
The European Union has strong laws against aiding human smugglers and illegal immigrants.
