Shared Lane Markings/Sharrows Indicate a shared environment for
bicycles and cars Often used on low speed roads
when there is not enough space to add bike lanes
Benefits: Alert drivers to expect cyclists on the
road
Recommend safest place to ride, e.g. safe distance from parked cars

Bike Lanes Designate an exclusive space for bicyclists
through the use of pavement markings and signage
Located adjacent to travel lanes or parking lanes
Benefits: Provide dedicated space, separate from
vehicles
Increase actual and perceived safety for bicyclists, encouraging more people to ride bikes
Traffic Calming: Visually narrows the roadway which encourages lower motor vehicle speeds
