Google is the most commonly used search engine, with about 70% of all web searches. The remaining 30% is split between Bing, Yahoo, ASK, AOL, and all other search engines.
In order for users to find your business on Google, you will need to be positioned in one of 3 areas:
• Natural, or organic listings- these are the search results that Google feels most closely match the user’s search.• Google Places- these are the map listings that display with many local searches, like ‘pest control richmond va’.• Google AdWords- these are the paid advertisements that appear at the top and right of most Google searches.

Organic listings are the results that start below the paid ads (the shaded area at the top)
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the work that is done to position your website on the first page of organic listings.
Generally you will contract for 5-10 keyword phrases, like ‘pest control richmond va’, to be optimized.
SEO takes time and ongoing efforts, for more competitive industries this can be 6-12 months to get to first page. In some cases SEO will never displace the sites that are already ranked.
SEO generally costs $500-1000 per month for 5-10 localized terms.

Sometimes local searches will also include information from Google Places (maps). Therefore it is important that your map listing is properly optimized.
Most businesses are already listed if they have a phone
Listings must be claimed to be edited
Photos, videos, descriptions, hours, and other informationcan be added to the listing
Listings in other online directories may affect yourplacement in Google Places
Google is changing terminology, to refer to these listingsas Google+. However, you still go to Google Places tomanage your listing

Google ads appear at the top and right side of most search results pages. Unlike SEO, paid ads can put you at the top of search results right away, delivering targeted prospects to your website.
Ads use a pay per click (PPC) model, there is no cost to display your ad unless a user clicks on it
Geographic targeting can be set so that your ads only display in your target service area(s)
Ads can be extended with phone numbers, map links, and links to specific pages on your website.
Budgeting controls allow you to set a monthly spend

To enhance your branding, and cultivate more sales, visitors to your website can be tagged so that your banner ads are displayed as they visit other websites.
