Matters of the heartFebruary is a perfect time to soak up heart-filled sentiments. Both physical and spiritual. As you enjoy the merriment of the season, take time to think about the importance of your heart health as well as your relational health and legacy. In two articles, Touchmark Vice President of Wellness & Programs Marge Coalman, EdD, discusses the importance of connecting with family (and especially creating an end-of-life plan) and shares helpful information from the 50th US Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health.

Exercise… is it worth it? Is time spent exercising really worth it? Many feel they get enough exercise during their day. Others feel they don’t need to lose weight, and therefore they don’t need to exercise. On the other hand, some just simply don’t like to exercise or say they can’t find the time. The “reasons” can go on and on—but we are designed to live and move!

According to the Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health, “Significant health benefits can be obtained by including a moderate amount of physical activity on most, if not all, days of the week. Through a modest increase in daily activity, most Americans can improve their health and quality of life.”

The Senior Fitness Association also states that exercise can help control blood pressure, foster heart health, regulate blood sugars, and relieve stress and increase energy levels.

We could read evidence all day long, but we all know the importance of moving and exercising. So put the “reasons” aside, and let us help you find the joy in staying fit. We can help create a personal program for you and introduce you to

classes and amenities that help you stay fit and live your Full Life! Visit us or call.

Coming soon: Kettlebell class Kettlebell training incorporates total-body exercises and requires the use of all major muscle groups and core stabilization. This intermediate level class is 30 minutes and will help increase strength, endurance, and muscle toning by focusing on the muscular and cardiovascular systems. Classes will be held in the exercise studio Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:15 pm. Certified KettleworX® instructor John Hume will lead the class.

Take a NeuroCom® Balance Master® assessment If you have experienced a recent fall, feel unsteady on your feet, have spells of dizziness, or have other reason to believe you might have a balance problem, you should talk to your doctor. Assisted by the medical history provided by your doctor, the club can offer you an assessment to determine your ability to maintain your balance, as well as your risk of falling. The Balance Master is an assessment and rehabilitation system and one of the most advanced tools of its kind. Through interactive computer technology, this

system objectively identifies and evaluates each individual’s unique balance and movement patterns. Using this information, the equipment-trained fitness expert can then design a customized treatment plan. For more information and to schedule your assessment, contact Mark Minette at 701-526-1055.

Relax with massage therapy Ongoing massage therapy can help you relieve pain and improve your sleep. Other benefits include increased flexibility in joints and muscles, reduced blood pressure, eased muscle tension and stiffness, and reduced stress, anxiety, and depression. Call Touchmark Massage Therapist Brenda Nelson at 701-212-0246 to make an appointment. Rates: $50 for an hour or $30 for 30 minutes.

Join us for heart-health presentation On Thursday, Feb. 13 at 2 pm, Sanford Registered Dietitian Maren Krueger and Touchmark Health & Fitness Director Mark Minette will highlight small changes that can make huge benefits in the health of your heart. Learn the ways you can prevent heart disease through diet and exercise. Touchmark Exercise Studio.

Residents and staff took on the challenge of collecting a gift for each child at Nokomis. Touchmark is the only company to successfully gather 160 presents—one for each child. From a giving teepee to the big delivery day, this epitomized the season of giving.

Kent Ellis, son of resident Cec Ellis, talked about North Dakota oil, including its history, the extraction process, tools, and more. He even brought samples of the layers of ground they go through to get the oil in the Bakken area.
