Speaker Notes: Women are outperforming men as it relates to attaining higher education; however, career progression is not only a factor of education. Progression is also tied to ones ambition to be in leadership.2Professional ambition is expected of men but is optional or worse, sometimes even a negative- for women. She is very ambitious is not a compliment in our culture.

Sheryl Sandberg, LEAN IN Women, work and the will to leadThis is on page. 173What would you do if you werent afraid?

Writing this book is not just me encouraging others to lean in. This is me leaning in. Writing this book is what I would do if I werent afraid. Sheryl Sandberg

We will ask the participants to jot a fear down on a note card.

Session Icebreaker: Ask participants to volunteer to talk about what they would do in their career if they did not let fear hold them back. 4

Understanding Your StrengthsA seat at the tableThe art of negotiating a raise

A Seat at the table

Women need to shift from thinking Im not ready to do that to thinking I want to do that and Ill learn by doing it. Sheryl Sandberg, Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead

TALK STRATEGY

When you get chance to be at the table, are you talking about your tactics? The deliverables you produced this quarter?

Change it!

Our execs and leaders really arent interested in the amount of tactical effort and time you put into creating all those data sheets or webinars. These leaders are focused on the goals of the business.

Take the chance to talk about strategy. Talk about the product marketing roadmap youve created and that is guiding you? (Dont have one? Create it!) Talk about your partnership with your internal partnersProduct managementDevelopmentMarketing services and communicationSalesTalk about how the alignment you have created in the buying process, not the tools created.Talk about not only the investment of your time in the market, but the learnings from that are changing how you establish relationships.

Keep this in mind: your business exec doesnt want to know how many of those data sheets you created, or how many hours of sales training were developed it is about the IMPACT of what you have done to PRODUCE result. Results drive the business, and gain the respect to earn the value6Women need to shift from thinking Im not ready to do that to thinking I want to do that and Ill learn by doing it.

Feeling confident or pretending that you feel confident is necessary to reach for opportunities. Its a clich, but opportunities are rarely offered; they are seized. Sheryl Sandberg

Know Your Worth

If you are new to product management and marketing you may be unaware of what the average starting salaries are for the industry. One resource you can look to is the 2013-2014 Annual Product Management and Marketing survey published by Pragmatic Marketing.

The components of understanding what you are worth include:

Your education: 44% of respondents had a masters degree or higherYears of experience: 25% of respondents had 6 to 10 years of experienceYour location: The average salary in the US is 127K. Respondents from the Pacific and Northeast regions not only had the highest salaries, but over a third of them received an annual bonus of $15,000+Who do you report to?: 32% report to Product Management and 22% to the President/CEO/Managing Director

What are some documented gender biases?Decades of studies have proven that our stereotype of men is that they are providers, decisive, and driven. Our stereotype of women holds that they are caregivers, sensitive and communal.

How many of you have seen this dynamic play out at your organization? When a woman excels both men and women will remark that she is accomplishing a lot, but is not well liked by her peers.

Things to do:

Stop muting your achievementsNegotiate more often. You do not have to take the first offer, but the goal should be to achieve your objective while maintaining your likabilityAcknowledge that you know women are often paid less than men and be willing to negotiate, but you must supply a legitimate reason for the negotiation. (i.e industry stats, etc. Dont sacrifice success just to be liked8Feeling confident or pretending that you feel confident is necessary to reach for opportunities. Dont leave before you leave

We compromise our career goals to make room for partners and children who may not even exist yet.Anyone lucky enough to have options should keep them open. Dont enter the workforce already looking for the exit. Dont put on the breaks. Accelerate. Keep a foot on the gas pedal until a decision must be made. Thats the only way to ensure that when that day comes, there will be a real decision to make. Sheryl Sandberg

Of all the industrialized nations in the world, the Unites States is the only one without a paid maternity leave policy. Pg 23

Insert personal story about relocating to Florida from Chicago

How many understand the Family Medical Leave Act? It provides job protection and continued benefits for 12 weeks after you have your baby, but it dictates nothing about paid maternity leave, which is up to your company policy. FMLA does not apply to employees who have worked for the company less than a year or less than 1250 hours. It also does not apply to those companies with fewer than 50 employees.11We compromise our career goals to make room for partners and children who may not even exist yet.

Sheryl Sandberg, LEAN IN Women, work and the will to leadThe more satisfied a person is with their position the less likely she will be to leave.

If you have an unsatisfying job, you may decide the sacrifice of not being with your child is just not worth it.12Do you have an equal partner? Are you an equal partner?

When women work outside the home and share breadwinning duties, couples are more likely to stay together. In fact, the risk of divorce reduces by half when a wife earns half the income and a husband does half the housework. True equality will be achieved only when we all fight the stereotypes that hold us back. Feeling threatened by others choices pulls us all down.
