According to FDC, Nigeria is currently experiencing mild recession and most of the economic indicators are red; only

consumption, household expenditure and the stock market are yellow. This shows manufacturers’ major concerns.

Competition is becoming stiffer as consumption and disposable income continues to decline while cost of production is

unpredictable due to non-fixed exchange rate by the CBN.

As this uncertainty continues, market forces and dynamics are not constant, but consumers expect their brands to remain

stable and consistent. Brand credibility and consistency seem the only trump card available for managers and

manufacturers at the moment. With major brands already owning spaces in the minds of the consumers through their

personality statements, positioning, imagery, communication among others; being consistent and ‘hanging in there’ by

digging deep to explore the brand values and potential is where managers are facing the most herculean task.

It is a fact that consumers do not want their brands to change no matter what, especially the core brand promises. They

want their brands to give them the ‘have got you’ and ‘won’t fail you’ feelings despite everything. Brand consistency

needs to be the core of brand activities right now with delivery on brand recognition cues and guaranty of quality.

This edition comes with another opportunity to give you insights into the world of brands and their activities including

launches and extensions across sectors and markets, it has different articles, opinions, events, opinions that will make the

time invested in worth the while. It is true that what defines a brand are its assets, strength and values. Its performance

on these three parameters reveal its equity; to help brand managers, we included an article on how to sustain brand

value in recession while the cherry of this edition is the corner for entrepreneurs, where we revealed the potentials of oil

palm in Nigeria and how to maximise it.

We promise that this is a read that will keep you longing for more.

Have a great time with BrandSpur Ng.

Emphasizing Brand value

…Five tips to retain brand value through a recession

How has the recession affected your brand and its reception in the market? Many companies batten

down the hatches and attempt to see themselves through any recession quietly and on maintenance

marketing budgets. However, most research about marketing through a recession identified

companies continuing to invest in marketing activities gain additional market share when they enter

the boom period at the expense of those that did not.

Maintain level and volume of your marketing activity and where possible your budget to ensure your brand

remains visible to your clients;

Maintain contact with your clients and speak directly to them using your knowledge of their buying

preferences to segment your market and through personalised mailings and sell your brand values not just

product benefits;

Automate your data and build up a customer relationship management system that improves the data mining

and performance management capability for your marketing investment;

Be innovative in your approach to the market and through new product development that allow you to quickly

respond to market conditions ahead of your competition;

Ensure an effective search engine marketing strategy is developed using branded and non-branded keywords.

How Brands are responding to the recession

When Promasidor began the production of powdered milk in 28g sachets, markets watchers wondered how long

this trend will last. Over 20 years down the line virtually all dairy brands have followed the trend – giving

consumers the option of purchasing milk in smaller, pocket-friendly units.

With the current austere economy compounded by the recession, more and more fast moving consumer goods

(FMCG) companies have followed suit. Now almost every household grocery has its minute alternative – from

chocolate drinks, to cleaning agents, toiletries, breakfast cereals and the like.A survey of the market revealed

that many brands now produce more of their pocket-friendly options as against the regular packs. “We

discovered that our Loya milk in small sachets sell faster than the tins. These days, not many people can afford

the 400g packs,” said a Promasidor spokesperson.

Many breakfast cereals like Cornflakes, Nestlé’s Golden Morn and Quaker Oats now have been repackaged with

options of smaller packs. “Part of my child’s food is Golden Morn but since the economic downturn, the normal

pack has increased from N450 to N600 while the 900g pack now costs N1,100 instead of N850. I resorted to

buying their 50g sachets which serves my daughter just one meal but since it is N100, at least, I can still afford

that compared to buying something of N600,” said Mrs. Fatima Yunus, a businesswoman in Lagos.

As the world’s attention stays heavily focused on energy and technology, the few entrepreneurs who

focus on large scale agriculture are reaping good profits from their investments. The agricultural

business ecosystem is widespread, because of the hundreds and possibly thousands of various crop

types that can be grown and sold as an income stream.

In the lot of these possible agricultural segments lies a profitable niche that only a few would dare

venture into. This is the palm oil business.

Two brothers have turned $5 into thriving juice business

They started out selling cups of lemonade at their college, but now two brothers have built a company in

Nigeria which distributes its juice in over 650 locations in 18 states in Africa's second largest economy.

With just $5, Seun and Seyi Abolaji set up Wilson's Juice company in Lagos, Nigeria in 2010. They say their

company is now worth millions.

Their company produces about 24,000 bottles of lemonade daily in a factory they built which employs 30.

Since starting the company, the two have raised nearly $200,000 with the help of family and friends and their

own savings.

"When we started thinking about Wilsons in Nigeria,

there was nobody doing lemonade. We went around

to anybody who would let us in their factory, and we

just started asking questions," said Seun Abolaji.

They talked to yogurt and water companies, and big

companies that were doing fizzy drinks, and

thought: "Hey, why is there nobody doing juice in a

bottle?“ The two seized the chance to tap into this

new market.

"We saw an opportunity with fresh juice and with lemons, it has so many health benefits," said Seun, who

added it's a healthy alternative to what's on the market now. "There are a lot of challenges...but could we have

started this company in the United States? I doubt it. We would need $10 million. We started this whole

company with 2,000 naira. That's $5 now. And that's the beauty of Nigeria, you can have a naira and a dream,"

said Seun.Read more…
