to be auspicious and sacred among people staying in Bihar so, almost all the wedding dresses and other attires worn by the brides are of red, yellow or golden colours. On the day of engagement the brides wear red saree or lehenga choli. On the wedding day, the bride may wear lehenga choli for the ritual of Varmala, but for the marriage rituals like kanyadan, saptapadi and vidai, she generally wears designer sarees.

are given to the barber. The reason is that these dresses are soiled and marks/colour of turmeric and henna is left on the clothes. So, the brides are presented with cheap wedding dresses on these rituals.

The bridal dresses as well as the bridesmaid dresses worn on the wedding day are highly decorated with latest and traditional designs of embroidery. Since various designers have offered their wedding collections, in modern times the brides are opting for designer sarees and lehenga also.

With the passes of time and out of box thinking of modern generation, now the brides are opting for dresses other than traditional. These may be salwar kameez, western styles dresses etc.

Like the brides, there are various options for boys in terms of wedding dresses when they become grooms. In general, the men of older generation wear kurta dhoti while the younger generation wear kurta pajama or shirt pant. But, for the ceremonial occasions like marriage the groom wear many kinds of dresses.

For men also, wedding dresses differ from rituals to rituals. On the day of engagement the groom usually wears the western dress. It may consist of shirt pant and coat. It may be of three-piece suit or two piece suit. In case of two piece suit, there is one court and pant of the same fabric. But, in case of three piece–suits there is short/sleeveless coat (called bandi) in addition to coat and pant of the same fabric. The same type of dress may be worn by the groom in rituals of Tilak and reception ceremony.

For the ritual of varmala the groom may be in western dress or in sherwani pajama. But, on the wedding day the groom necessarily wears the traditional dress. It may Sherwani pajama, Kurta Dhoti etc. In some place (of Mithilanchal) the groom wears only dhoti during the wedding rituals of kanyadan, phera (sapta padi) etc.
