8. beautyCoverLook ourteen hair and makeup changes might
intimidate the average newbie model. But not Kendall Jenner. For
her Teen Vogue cover story, she transformed seamlessly into runway
characters from falls top collections, one after another, in record
speed. And she did it all with a smile. I think the spectrum of
looks reect the many sides of Kendall: strong, sensitive, funny,
bold, and sweet, says makeup artist Marla Belt. And with all those
outt changes, the hair and makeup had to be done in a ash. It
became spontaneous and coolertheres an edge that comes from not
think- ing about it too much, Belt says. Even with bleached brows
and burgundy lips, Kendalls signature glowy skin and lush lashes
remained center stage. Although the star is famous for wearing her
hair loose and unadorned, shes now a huge fan of braids. Kendall
absolutely loved when I gave her the pigtails, says hairstylist
Neil Moodie, who also showed her how to master falls cornrow craze
(see previous page). With so many beauty looks, hows a girl to
choose her favorite? I think the electric blue liner might have
been it, Belt speculates. Her pose and attitude immediately
changed. She became tougher and more punk. How tting for fashions
newest face! f Neil Moodie and his assistant perfect Kendalls
street-style braids. They needed to have that slight severity to
look fresh, he explains. People associatepigtails withyoung
girls. The right outfittoughens themup, Moodie says. The set had a
fun, relaxed vibe. Stylist Elin Svahns little dog Zero even
appeared in one of the shots. MARC BY MARC JACOBS SPORTMAX PRADA

13. Contributors My big break was doing Charlotte Ramplings
hair, remembers renowned hairstylist Didier Malige. It was for the
Le Bal Proust given by Guy de Rothschild, and the theme was La
Belle poque. At the time, Didier was working at the famed Jean
Louis David in Paris, one of the most prestigious salons in the
city. Nearly six years later, he was asked to manage Jean Louis
Davids Manhattan outpost, and it was then that he began working on
editorial shoots. He quickly developed a reputation for
revolutionary coifs that were fashion-forward without being
fussyapproachable, as he describes it. In this issue, Didier takes
on brilliant shades of redthe seasons bold new huein Hot Heads
(page 186). I love red hair; I live with red hair, he says,
referring to longtime partner Grace Coddington, Vogues inimitable
creative director. It was the perfect story for me. Judging by the
eye-catching results, wed have to agree. With mesmerizing vocals,
minimalistic R&B production, and a stage presence thats
simultaneously vulnerable and strong, Banks (Banks Enchanted, page
88) is quickly proving shes a force to be reckoned with. But the
sultry powerhouse wasnt always this self-assured. My music is so
personal and raw that for a long time I didnt want too many people
to know about it, she says. I kept it close to myself, but I always
knew Id get there, and I did. Banks burst onto the scene in 2013,
releasing a slew of impressive singles and EPs that garnered high
praise and a cult following. Less than two years later, she has a
highly anticipated debut album, dropping this month, and is selling
out concerts across the countrybut dont think its gone to her head.
Meeting people who connect to my music is the most special
experience, she reveals. banks didier malige

14. 68 SEPTEMBER 2014 Watching Kendall change her character
through the fashion she wore was really great, says Emma Summerton
of shooting this months cover girl (Kendalls Time, page 156). The
Australian-born image-maker originally thought she would become a
painter, but fell in love with photography while studying at the
National Art School in Sydney. It felt less isolating, and I loved
the technical aspect of it, she says. I became hooked. Emma started
out as a photo assistant in Sydney and has since become known for
her striking fashion scenes and portraits and lent her expert eye
to publications including W,WW Dazed & Confused, and the
international editions of Vogue. She now splits her time between
London and New York City. Her advice to aspiring photogra- phers?

first met Phillip Lim a few years ago, when I was reviewing one of
his collections for Vogue. So it made sense for my first Teen Vogue

ACHARA was 20 when I rst visited New York, and I knew immediately
it was where I had to be, says Alexandra Perron, now 26, who has
worked at garancedore.com for two-and-a-half years. The site, one
of the original and most successful fashion blogs, is produced by
Garance Dor Studio, a tight-knit team of six, which reects the
founders intimate approach. The relationship between Garance and
her readers is really important, Alexandra explains. We talk to
them the same way we do our friends. i ROUGE LA LA Dont be afraid

18. FashionatWork mong Alexandras responsibilities are
brainstorming content, creating a story schedule, and coordinating
photo shoots. In addition to darting between appointments with
beauty brands and at fashion-house showrooms, she pens a blog post
each day. I write everything in English, but its translated into
French, she says. I swear, Im learning the language! The Gallic
vocabulary has even seeped into her closet. Alexandra counts Vogue
Paris editor in chief Emmanuelle Alt as an inspiration. Parisian
style is very masculine-meets-feminine, and theres always a
personal element, she says. You dont see many French girls wearing
full runway looks. Garance does it well; shes the best person to
shop with. Alexandra knows rsthandlast fall Garance recommended she
buy a Zara faux-leather jacket, and it remains a staple today. We
even posted on the blog about it, she says. Outerwear aside,
Alexandras go-tos are Equipment shirts, Uniqlo jeans, and her
grandfathers watch. And with such a packed work schedule, footwear
choices are key: I usually head to the ofce in ballerina ats or
slip-on sneakers, she says. Ill bring heels only if I have a big
meeting or an event in the evening. Before joining the studio,
Alexandra interned at local publications and for a big-name
designer while she was a student at the University of Minnesota. I
watched Unzipped dozens of times, she recalls. One day I called
Isaac Mizrahis ofce and asked if they needed summer interns. A few
days later I was offered an internship in public relations! In
2010, after shed graduated, Alexandra moved to New York for an
internship at PR agency BPCM and a retail job at Banana Republic.
She challenged herself to nd a style-focused position by fashion
week that September and, a few weeks later, was hired as a fashion
news contributor at Lucky. These days, fashion week is Alexandras
busiest time of yearand also the most rewarding. I love covering
backstage beauty, she enthuses. I take photos for the blog. I
interview makeup artists, hairstylists, and models and often get a
peek at what will be on the runway, too! Alexandras most memorable
moment so far came during her rst trip to Paris Fashion Week. I got
an invitation to the Chanel show, she remembers. Im pretty sure I

course in what its like to work for a huge brand as we navigate the

that targets a few people, versus designing something that appeals
to a million girls and their different body types, she says, citing
oversize knits, leatherlike leggings, sequins, and pretty, romantic

simple basics. WITH HER SISTER AND MOM odeling has really opened me
up to meeting inspiring people and getting outside my comfort zone,
says Langley Fox Hemingway, the skilled illustrator and burgeoning
model whos been busy captivating the fashion world with her many
talents. Mixed with the hermit life of an artist, I think it fits
in well. Langley, the daughter of Academy Award nominee Mariel
Hemingway and the sister of seasoned model and emerging actress
Dree Hemingway, spent her childhood in Ketchum, Idaho, where her
great- grandfather Ernest Hemingway had once lived. After
relocating to Los Angeles, she went on to study fashion at Otis
College of Art and Design, only to realize that drawing was her
true passion. Thats what I pursued after school because it was what
I enjoyed most during my studies, Langley says. When shes not
illustrating the next It bag or sporting the latest Saint Laurent
looks on the runway (I wanted to steal all of the clothes!),
Langley keeps it low-key. The constant sunshine and warmth in Los
Angeles is wonder- ful, she says. I love hiking and being outside
in the moun- tains. Langley may be the industrys latest muse, but
shes still a free-spirited girl at heart. ALEXANDRA THURMOND

like youve raided your moms teenage closetis easy: Put on a skirt

32. sk Stuart Vevers, Coachs new creative director, to define
the heritage brands girl, and hell tell you this: She has an
effortless, cool attitude with a lightness of spirit. While thats
clear from the shearling coats, space-rocket sweaters, and
abbreviated skirts dotting his fall lineup, Stuart could just as
easily have been alluding to burgeoning songstress Chle Howl, the
flame-haired 19-year-old from London who is fast becoming known for
her smoky pop vocals and boy-meets-girl dress sense. I love the
bomber jacket! she enthuses of the red-and- black herringbone
design after trying it on for our shoot. I tend to wear a lot of
patterns onstage. Its much more interesting to jump out in loads of
colors rather than disappear into the background in gray! Needless
to say, there is none of that here. Even the berfunctional Rhyder
satchel, inspired by tool belts and outerwear, comes in uplifting
scarlet, eggshell blue, and saffronperfect for loading up with
textbooks and turning heads around campus. While Stuarts collection
gives a respectful nod to Coachs storied past, his vibrant update
is securely rooted in the present. I wanted it to feel
unapologetically youthful, he explains. People are attracted to
clothes that make them feel energized. It may have been a road trip
across America that inspired Stuart, but his urban-preppy line is
sure to travel even farther. E.A.A. a EASYRHYDER Coach Rhyder 33

without a stylish accompaniment: sister Poppy, bestie Jourdan Dunn,
or a low-hanging backpack slung across her shoulders. I love
wearing [a bag] on my back, she says emphatically. Its comfy, it
feels rightand I can move fast! Not only have hordes of fashion
paparazzi on street-style patrol captured the blue-blooded model in
navy monogrammed and tartan renditions, but Caras even stepped out
after hours in a gleaming black leather mini version worn over a
floor- sweeping kimonoa sleek specimen pulled straight from her
punk-goes-uptown collaboration with the British brand Mulberry.
Caras loyalty to the traditional schoolgirl go-toand the reason
behind this ultrachic design partnershipcomes down to the backpacks
enduring practicality: I wanted to create a bag that is so
versatile it would fit in with everything I do, wherever I go, she
explains of the quilted nappa, natural leather, and haircalf camo

CHANEL RUNWAY HER STREET STYLE IN VOGUE PARIS uring a packed fall
fashion week, Anna Ewers, 21, walked in 49 shows and closed one
very important runway: Alexander Wangs. I met Alex at the casting
for his rst Balenciaga collection, she says, recalling that
game-changing moment in her career. Fast-forward a year and Anna
has already been featured in Wangs ad campaign and even locked arms
with him for the CFDA Fashion Awards. Id never been on a red carpet
like that before, she enthuses. But being there with Alex made it
feel like a family affair. Anna counts the slinky gown she wore,
custom-made by her date, as a favorite. Off duty, her look is a
balancing act: Its tomboy and a bit irty, with a mix of vintage. It
girl? We think so. C.K. d

35. Marc by Marc Jacobs receives a rad update this season,
complete with a cool collab. Our girl is confident, playful, and
rebellious, with a sense of humor, says new design director Luella
Bartley. Recently appointed creative director Katie Hillier adds,
We wanted to create a character who portrayed a strong energy and
felt like a modern look at femininity. Emblazoned with offbeat
declarations (Uprising and Bunny Hop), these multitone bags will
add a fierce one- two punch to your wardrobe. Both were created
with Fergus Purcell, a London-based artist whose work, in his
words, is informed by eighties skate and surf culture, comics, and
thrash metal. An eclectic mix, for sure. Fergus also channeled
motocross graphics for the bold motifs. Luella and Katie already
had the Riot Grrrl thing going, he says. It was the perfect theme

New York City. This is the sixth time since February! I might have
to start saying no at some point, because Im getting worried theyre
going to fall out! Such is the life of a working model. Ever since
the 18-year-old made her fashion week debut in February, walking in
Marc Jacobss fall 2014 show (with, yes, bleached brows) and
starring in a first-of-its-kind Instagram portfolio for vogue.com,
Kendall has become one of fashions most in-demand new talents. Shes
also one of its most high-profilealthough, of course, her fame
predates her runway success: As a member of the Kardashian-Jenner
clan, Kendall has been in the public eye for the better part of a
decade. Her celebrity has been a boon to her in general, but its
unlikely to have helped much in her transition to the serious
high-fashion gigs that, she says, have long been her dream. Fame is
useful to a model when modeling is the thing shes famous forjust
ask Gisele Bndchen, whom Kendall says shes idolized since
childhoodbut for an aspirant, like Kendall was until very recently,
it isnt necessarily an asset. (This somewhat explains why 20-plus
cycles of Americas Next Top Model have yielded precisely zero top
models.) Alesser-knowndesigner mightbe afraid, for

typical teen pursuits, like cheerleading, snowboarding, and
horseback riding. (She had three horses, she reports. Jumper
competitions were my big thing for a while.) It was only when she
turned 17 that she decided to kick her career into high gear. I was
like, All right, Im going to start taking this seriously. She
switched agencies and began plotting a strategy that involved being
very selective about potential gigs. I felt like I should pick
specific designers that I wanted to go for so I could make a good
first impressionor more like a fifth impression, Kendall says,
laughing. But its my first impression on this world. At go-sees she
strove to show casting directors and designers that she could
project something more than just the very smiley and peppy vibe
shed relied on for previous shoots; Marc Jacobs was convinced

54. offer her a spot in his show. It was exciting to see
Kendall not just as a Kardashian but as a model, he explains. Shes
a fresh young girl whos interesting, charming, and charismatic, and
she looked great in the clothes. She did, although her runway debut
was not entirely without incidentsome online commenters criticized
the sheer top she wore. I didnt dress myself, she points out. Marc
dressed me, and I wasnt going to question it. I knew it might get
attention, but I didnt really care. It was his show, and I was
going to wear whatever he wanted me to wear. It was, she notes, her
first time walking in an official fashion week show: I wasnt going
to complain already. Indeed, very few new models would. Kendall
also banned her paparazzi-bait family from attending in a further
attempt to fit in. I didnt need a hundred people in the audience
having their picture taken, she says. I wanted to do it on my own,
especially the first time. I thought Id be more nervous, but I was
fine. I was excited! The other girls helped me chill out. They were
like, Youll do great, and that calmed me down. And Kendall was glad
to have been given boots to wear for her first trip down the
catwalk. Im 100 percent comfortable in heels, she says, but every
model has that fear of falling. You cant fall in flats. After her
big break Kendall was off and running. In London she modeled for
Giles, and in Paris she walked for both Givenchy and Chanel. She
relished all three experiences, but the latter, she says, was like
a fantasy. When people used to ask me what my dream job was, Id say
it was walking for Chanel, she reveals. And I did it, and it was
incredible. She could almost retire nownot that shes going to!
Instead, Kendall says, she hopes to hit the runways again this
month, if, she adds humbly, someone will take me. At press time she
was making her haute couture debut for Chanel at the Grand Palais
in Paris and was seen in her very first high-fashion print campaign
for Givenchy. And though rumors of a campaign with Topshop were
unconfirmed, owner Sir Philip Green, who dressed Kendall in custom
Topshop for Mays Met gala, took time out of his packed schedule to
sing her praises. The fact that she laid down in the car on the way
over in order to avoid creasing the gown tells you everything you
need to know about her, he says. (For that photo, check Kendalls
Instagram, @kendalljenner.) She loves fashion, and she looked
fabulous. Asked directly if she might someday work with the brand,
he said, Thats a conver- sation wed be happy to have with her. So
what does Kendall want, now that so many of her dreams have come
true? Longevity, she says simply. Id like to do this for a very
long time. Until Im old. Indeed, she has no other plans. That
scares me, she admits, but then I remind myself that Im only 18 and
that I still have continued 197

72. anxiety m a totally anxious person. I just build things up
in my head until they get worse and worse, and then I dont want to
face them, says Natasha, 15. The high school sophomore has been
treated for generalized anxiety disorder since she was in seventh
grade. It was superhard to go to school and just be a normal kid,
she says. Even now my feelings are difficult to deal with. Social
stuff makes me anxious, and tests, and fights with my parents.
After confiding in a classmate about how she felt, students began
to make fun of her, bullying her so badly that she ultimately
transferred schools. Despite the stigma, Natashas situation is
incredibly commonaccording to the National Institute of Mental
Health, 8 percent of teens ages 13 to 18 have an anxiety disorder.
And between the pressures of juggling school, SATs, and college
applications on top of a social life, dating, and extracurriculars,
theres no shortage of triggers. I see a very high level of anxiety
around academ- ics, reports Lisa M. Schab, LCSW, a psychotherapist
and the author of The Anxiety Workbook for Teens. But I also think
teens worry more because they know more. Theyre plugged-in enough
to hear about corruption, crime, violence, terrorism, kids hurting
other kids. That contrib- utes to an overall unease, whether
conscious or not. I We all know what anxiety feels like: Your heart
starts pounding, your hands get sweaty, your head feels like it
might float off your body, and youre overcome by a sense of worry
or dread, sometimes for seemingly no reason at all. But whats
normal? Is it OK to feel that way all the time? And when does
typical anxiety cross over into a more serious mental disorder, the
kind that needs medical attention? It may seem counterintuitive,
but anxiety isnt always a bad thing. Normal anxiety can actually be
your best friendexperiencing it causes you to devise coping
strategies, asserts Katherine K. Dahlsgaard, Ph.D., lead
psychologist of the Anxiety Behaviors Clinic at The Childrens
Hospital of Philadelphias Department of Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The anxiety you feel before a
big test, for example, encourages the healthy choice to study. Take
21-year-old Andrea: When Im anxious, its usually about a deadline
Im scared I wont be prepared for, she says. So I write liststons of
lists and schedules. I find that writing down what I need to do
helps clear my mind and calm me down. But if anxiety were more
helpful than harmful, girls all over the world wouldnt be
struggling with a spate of serious anxiety-related conditions, like
panic From minor freak-outs to major panic attacks, anxiety affects
everyone. But how do you know when yours is something more? Teen

73. disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social pho- bias,
and generalized anxiety disorder. Anxiety affects my life every day
in nearly every situation, says Kailee, 21. At night I cant sleep
because Im worried about waking up in time for class, in class I
drink coffee to stay awakeand caffeine heightens my anxietyand I
dont know anyone Im working with when were broken up into groups.
All of this makes me panic. So how do you know youre feeling
something more than typical stress? For Natasha, a school therapist
noted her anxiety and alerted her parents, who brought her to a
doctor. But there are other ways to check in with yourself. Having
too much anxiety results in holding back, avoiding, and escaping
from situations that may be challenging in some way, says Anne
Marie Albano, Ph.D., an associate professor of clinical psy-
chology in psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center and the
clinical director at New York Presbyte- rian Hospitals Youth
Anxiety Center. When anxiety interferes with your dreams and goals,
or causes you to stay home feeling tense or shaky or having panic
attacks, you know its not normal. The urge to withdraw or hide in
your room is a symptom that overlaps with depressionand, actually,
symptoms of depression and other mood disorders can mask your
anxiety and make it harder to diagnose. Thats why its so important
to seek help, even if its intimidating. Share your experience with
