Kenyan Clothing

Compare the way people are dressed in this picture to the waypeople dress in the United States, India and China.

The majority of Kenyans dress similarly to the way we dress in theUnited States. Many men dress in suits and ties. Women will oftenwear a skirt and blouse or a shirt on top with a khanga wrappedaround her like a skirt.

Describe the fabric (khangas) the women are wearing in this picture.

You might notice that the clothes the children are wearing aresimilar to clothes you wear.

Many of the clothes that Kenyan people wear come from theUnited States and Europe.

Each school has a uniform. Girlswear a blouse and skirt or adress and shirt. Boys wear pantsand shirts, all in a specifiedcolor.

Some tribes have kept their traditional dress and life style. The Masaiare probably the most well known tribe out of the 70 tribes in Kenya.

The men are famous for wearing a red-checkedshuka (Masai blanket). They often carry aspear and/or a wood ball-ended club.

When males become ‘morans’ (warriors), around age 14, theytraditionally dye their hair red with ochre and fat.

Masai women typically wear large colorful,plate-like bead necklaces that they make,and khangas.
