On 18th December this year, the new Star Wars film will be coming out at the cinema. Because of how popular this film is and also how popular the Day of the Dead Festival is, artist John Karpinsky created these images.

What is the Day of the Dead festival?

The Day Of The Dead Festival is where people celebrate their lost ones and them moving on to a better place. This happens from the 1st November to the 2nd November.

How do people celebrate this special day?

Mexicans make handcrafts, including paper mache skeletons and candy skulls for the festival.People also decorate graves with orange marigold flowers, they clean the graves, lay down gifts and sweets and bring alcoholic drinks such as tequila, mezcal and pulque. Some people spend all night next to the graves of the loved ones.Some Mexicans make ‘ofrenda’ food. This is where people leave food sitting out in their home as it is believed that the dead will eat the spiritual essence of the food. Any food left over can then be eaten when the festival is over.

What artwork is created to represent this occasion?

The artwork created to represent the day of the dead are usually Skulls and or Skeletons, they normally have vibrant colors the stand out, they feature flowers occasionally as well.

What I think of the festival…..

I think the festival is very good and is probably a lot of fun, I like all of the masks and costumes and the artwork that’s linked to the festival, overall I think I would enjoy the day of the dead festival because it looks very good.
