1. Canine Healthcare.

Healthy dogs are happy, they run and play, they eat their food and are eager to go anywhere. Healthy dogs sleep regularly, they are alert to their surroundings and will jump up when you say “treat.” But, do you know what signs to look for when a dog is sick? Some dogs may actually hide from humans. They just don’t have a way to alert us that something is wrong with them. So it’s up to us, the human to be well aware and knowledgeable about what a dog looks like when it’s sick.

Let’s watch this YouTube video that features a Veterinarian: “How to Tell If Your Dog is Sick.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7PlRiJybLQ

1. Canine Healthcare.

After viewing the video see if you can answer these questions: 1. What is the color of a dog’s healthy gums? What color would they be if they

were sick? 2. How would you check a dog’s pulse? 3. How do you check a dog’s temperature? 4. How would you rate the behavior of the dog? Many health problems do occur in certain dog breeds because of in-breeding,

unsafe puppy mills and diseases inherited from their parents. For instance, German Shepherds are prone to hip displacer while Cocker Spaniels are prone to ear and skin infections.

Having a good relationship with your veterinarian will help you stay on top of

your dog’s health.

Task #1

Give your dog a physical! Just like going to the Doctor’s office for a physical, look over and check your dog’s body: 1. The coat/hair – check for fleas, dry skin, skin irritations 2. Paws and foot pads – free from splinters, stickers, dirt clogs 3. Legs and Tail 4. Anus – YES! It maybe gross but you need to check for

bleeding or worms. 5. Mouth and Teeth – bleeding gums or cracked teeth 6. Nose – temperature and dryness 7. Ears – infections, wax buildup (dogs who like to swim may get

ear infections) 8. Eyes – clear and free from debris (dogs who like to dig may get

dirt in their eyes)

Know what your dog looks like when it’s healthy and give them a quick health check every week. The more you know about their health, the

quicker you will respond when they are sick. 8

2. Dog Psychology…

Dog psychology is very simple. In their natural world there are leaders and followers. We teach dog’s to “follow” humans because we have assumed the leadership role in their lives. This next YouTube video clip we present is from a very real, opinionated person who has his own way of explaining the basics of dog psychology. You may not agree with everything he has to say but keep an open mind and look beyond what he is saying, watch his dog in the video, watch his tone and how he handles his dog. He is the leader and his dog is his follower.

2. Dog Psychology… Have you heard of Cesar Millan? He is noted as a top dog training professional, no doubt about that. He specializes in rehabilitating aggressive dogs. Some people think he is remarkable, he is wonderful at what he can do for dogs and their owners. But then you have others (like the guy in the woods from the previous video) who may not like his methods.

Let’s watch a CBS News special on Cesar Millan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYc3to7M3wk

After viewing the video see if you can answer these questions: 1. What is one of Cesar Millan’s pet peeves? 2. What does Cesar Millan say is the biggest problem in the human/dog relationship?

Which one is the problem? 3. Why is exercise important to a dog? 4. What can “pack power” do for a dog? 5. Cesar talks about the three “tones” he used on the farm. What are they? 6. According to the reporter, what is Cesar Millan’s real specialty?

2. … and Dog Behavior. It’s fair to say that what a dog is feeling will be expressed through it’s body, a form of physical communication. Even though dogs cannot “talk” about their feelings, they can certainly tell us in other, non-verbal ways. Watch these examples of dog behaviors; they are cute and funny YouTube clips made by regular dog owners: • Dog goes from happy to sad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsuK0mQg534&feature=related • The gentleness of a dog playing with a human baby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbdYsNRPlDc • Dog protects a kitten from other dogs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF2KAmDOJFs&feature=related • Dog loving a human baby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4KBxaZslx4&feature=related

Task #2

Do this task when your dog is resting or sleeping. 1. When your dog is resting or sleeping, calmly go by their side

and gently sit down next to them. 2. Start petting them softly. If they get startled by you touching

them do nothing, allow them to recognize you but still pet them gently.

3. Speak in a soft a soothing tone, “That is a good girl/boy. Good dog. You are a very good girl/boy.” Repeat this 4-5 times.

4. If they get up, allow them to get up. But, you should stay seated and calm. Do not become excited with the dog. Try to get the dog to lay down.

5. The goal is to reward the calm behavior of the dog, we want their mind to be at peace.

6. So when your dog is resting, give them calming positive attention. The more we reward this calm behavior, the more calm and happy our dog will be.

A Special Note About Dog Trainers…

Do you remember high school and all the different teachers you

had for each subject? Do you also remember that each teacher had

a special way to teach? Well… the same goes for dog trainers.

There are many different trainers or teachers who specialize in a

certain dog training area and each trainer has their own special

way of teaching dogs and more importantly, the dog owner.

Planet-Puppy recommends that you check out and research many

trainers. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

3. Puppy Training.

Let’s watch a YouTube video made by HOWDINI:

“How to Train a Puppy to Sit and Stay” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaG-

3. Puppy Training.

After viewing the video see if you can answer these questions: 1. When should you start puppy training? 2. Train your puppy is _____________, ______________ or _____________. 3. Can dogs feel human emotions? What type of attitude should you have when

training your puppy? 4. What type of an attention span do dogs have? 5. How often should you train your dog? How many times a day? How many

minutes? 6. When training your dog for the first time, should the dog follow your hand

with the treat? What should you be doing with the other hand? 7. Why should you feed your dog good dog food? What does this do for dog

training?

3. More Puppy Training.

Did you remember that good training communication

includes your voice, eye, timing, and treats?

3. More Puppy Training. Training your dog and ensuring he is well behaved works like a cycle, it’s a process that needs to be repeated. The cycle is the base of all training and is very important to remember.

But what if you are teaching the dog something new? What do you do?

To teach a dog a new command, something he has never learned before, the cycle would look different. First the command would be spoken followed by a physical movement made by the trainer to show the dog what to do, followed by a treat and lastly the trainer would give lots of happy praise. The treat shows the dog that if he moves in that position, then he will receive a good gesture. Some dogs do learn more quickly then others. Every dog is unique in their learning curve. So have patience for your special canine friend and simply repeat the process until he gets it right. Got it?

CAMP MIGHTY PAW

Task #3

Let’s practice…. Get some dog treats and find a comfortable space for you and your puppy or dog, either in your living room or back yard. 1. Say the command “sit” while holding the treat above it’s head.

When the puppy is looking up at the treat, gently push it’s butt down until it sits.

2. Give the puppy the treat right away, when it’s butt is on the ground.

3. Cheer with praise “Good boy/girl!” in a happy voice.

Daily Practice: Practice this type of obedience training every day. You don’t have to practice the

same command like “sit.” But set some time aside and schedule which command you would like to practice with your dog. On Monday you could practice the “down”

command. On Tuesday you may wish to practice the “Sit” and “down” command. On other days you can practice the “heal” or “stay” commands. This type of daily

training ensures your puppy’s obedience, becoming a well-behaved adult. 23

3. More Puppy Training.

When you leave a puppy or dog by itself many problems arise. Dogs do get separation anxiety and can destroy your house if they are allowed to roam free. To prevent a new dog or puppy from destroying the home , it is strongly recommended to invest in a dog crate or kennel large enough for the dog to stand in. The “closeness” of the kennel helps the dog to feel more secure.

Let’s watch a short YouTube video on crate training your puppy made by AHAA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjH92wbE9io&feature=related

After viewing the video see if you can answer these questions: 1. How was the puppy introduced to the dog kennel in the video? Was it forced? 2. What items should you include in the crate? 3. How often do puppies need to go on a potty break? 4. Should you go to a puppy every time it cries? Why or why not?

24

Page 25: 3. Planet-Puppy Summer Camp Week 2

CAMP MIGHTY PAW

3. More Puppy Training.

Having a kennel or a crate is also ideal for potty training your puppy. Puppies and dogs are least likely to go poop or pee right where they sleep. So let’s watch this video from YouTube: • HOWDINI: “How to Potty Train a Puppy” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_X13V54idk&feature=related

After Viewing the video see if you can answer these questions: 1. Should you establish a routine when housebreaking your puppy? Why? 2. What is the general rule of thumb shown in the video? 3. Should you use a command or a phrase when it’s time to go potty? Why? 4. Should you reward your puppy after he goes potty outside? When? How often? 5. What should you do 2 ½ hours before the puppy’s bedtime? 6. Should you keep a watchful eye over your puppy? Why?

Now let’s watch the video on crate training suggested by HOWDINI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W058M4Qdyc&feature=fvwrel

3. More Puppy Training.

How to avoid bad behavior. In order for a puppy or dog to learn good behavior they will behave negatively. And even though it makes us mad, we must come to realize that they are still learning the boundaries of our human world. There are ways to change this bad behavior but the dog owner has to keep a watchful eye over his puppy or dog and they must act quickly in correcting the unwanted behavior. It’s like catching a burglar in the act, the more times they are caught, the least likely they will act bad. One of the first behaviors of puppies is biting. Puppy biting is their “test” of our boundaries. They want to know how far they can go before we react. Watch this next video on how to stop puppies from biting made by HOWDINI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dKiaKSEilg&feature=pyv

26

3. More Puppy Training.

After viewing the video see if you can answer these questions: 1. What will happen if you don’t teach your dog not to bite? 2. If you puppy bites to hard, what should you do? Should you yell? 3. What are the first 2 steps in helping puppies not to bite? 4. What are ice cubes used for? 5. What should you “pretend” to do?

Now here are some important things to remember as we end this week: • Check your dog’s health weekly making sure they stay happy and healthy. • A dog’s psychology is very simple, they don’t need to be coddled like a baby. But

they do need to be socialized with other dogs and people to maintain a healthy mental state of mind.

• Dog’s are sensitive creatures and they do feel emotions. • Each dog trainer has their own special way to teach and connect with dogs. Cesar

Millan helps rehabilitate older dogs with problems while Planet-Puppy focuses on establishing good puppy-parenting skills (to reduce the amount of problems a dog might have when it’s older).

• Obedience training needs to be practiced everyday while you are positive and happy. • If you get frustrated with your dog while training him or her, take a break!
