The HOW of 'Innovation through Out of Box thinking

Innovation is done by ‘Moving out of the Box’. But HOW does one do it? After the initial excitement, WHAT technique is to be used to do that.

Simple actually. Move from product to its FUNCTION.

How would you rate a novel umbrella which does not use any fabric hood to deflect the

rain, uses electricity and lasts only for 15 minutes?


• Most people I asked said, ' What's the great deal? Fabric, in any case, is cheap and what's an umbrella that lasts only 15 minutes. Huh, big deal!’


If you are basing your comment on the present utility of this device for use in rains, your comment is justified. But if you were an innovator, you could be smacked for making such a comment.


How do a furniture designer produce a better chair? He plays around with the design of its four legs, seat, back-rest, capacity etc. This is so because primarily he believes that a chair is a 'contraption of four legs, one seat, a back-rest and maybe two arm-rests'. Inside this sandbox, he plays.


• But the innovator moves from product to its function and purpose. Not what a chair IS, but what a chair DOES.

• What does a chair DO? It helps you to sit comfortably.


• To achieve that FUNCTION, any shape will do. Once you thus break out of the box of the present chair, you can even think of making a chair like the image that follows--



• You see, the typical businessman only improves the existing product, while the innovator moves from HIS PRODUCT to YOUR NEEDS- and makes a killing.
