Concept of ethics
Ethics concerns moral and philosophy.The study of moral, as contrasted with legal,
obligations is called ethics.The ethics of profession are the same as those
which every individual in society and society as a whole should abide by.
One main thing that ethics tells is the plain,, everyday honesty. Businessmen should not cheat, steal, lie, bribe or take bribe. But nor should anyone else
CONCEPT OF PROFESSIONALISM
The meaning of professional was spelled out clearly, about 2500 years ago in the Hippocratic oath of the Greek physician: primum non nocere- “Above all, not moving to do harm.
No professional, be he doctor, lawyer or manager, can promise that he will indeed do good for his client. All he can do is try do good. But he can promise that he will not knowingly do harm.
The professional has to have autonomy. He cannot be controlled, supervised or directed by the client.
NEED FOR PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
To remove the fear from the minds of general public of being cheated at the hand of professionals.
To safeguard the interest of the society as a whole.To inculcate service motive and high moral
standards in the professionals.To gain respect and trust from the general public
CODE OF PROFESSIONAL EHICS
Rule for complying with various laws, such as antitrust, environmental, and consumer protection laws, also are popular code provisions.
The most effective codes are those drawn up with the co-operation and widespread participation of employees
A shortcomings of many codes is that they tend to provide more protection for the company than for the employees and the general public.
TYPICAL PROBLEMS OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS
In certain cases of business professionalism, it is really very difficult to decide as to what is wrong what is right. The situation for professional engineers can be summarized follows :
Production Manager of your competitor firm wants to join your organization and would tell you ail the opponent’s plan for future.
Your assistant recommends sending a colour TV to the purchase manager of another firm which buys raw material from you.
