Welcome to the HealthXL Report for March 2015. Every month we get the opportunity to talk to a wide range of innovative digital health companies. This report profiles a subset of these companies that we have interviewed and see as the most exciting, because of their market traction, innovative technology and new creative models for the delivery of care.

All companies featured in this report relate to the HealthXL Moonshots and Challenges. For the purpose of this report, a brief of each of the HealthXL Moonshots and Challenges is provided below.

HealthXL Moonshots Big Data Moonshot Accessing, integrating and applying disparate and new sources of data that has clinical relevance to the caregiver. Improving health literacy and provide actionable data that incentivizes the patient to engage and improve their own healthcare.

Connected Health Moonshot Providing synchronous and seamless monitoring from conception to end of life regardless of the time, place, person or device.

Behavior Change Moonshot Millions of hearts beating younger, stronger and longer by informing consumers with more reasons to be healthy, and engaging the support of peers, family, friends and work colleagues in each others well being.

HealthXL Challenges Heart Failure Challenge To reduce avoidable hospital readmissions for heart failure patients through the utilization of connected devices selected to suit the individual patients needs, combined with behavioral modification and therapeutic interventions. This will enable better post discharge monitoring of the patient and early intervention if exasperation is detected using home care teams.

COPD Challenge Build a COPD patient monitoring system utilizing the most effective connected health devices to feed a predictive algorithm capable of early detection of patient health deterioration. A predictive algorithm that is both sensitive and specific enough to recognize the early onset of a hospitalization event should enable sufficient time to treat the patient prior to the need to hospitalize thereby increasing the QOL of the patient and reducing the number of “revolving door” COPD patients admitted to hospitals.

Clinical Trials Challenge The model and costs for developing new drugs is unsustainable, currently costing $2.5b over a 10-year period. The aim of this Challenge is to examine all aspects of the clinical trials process and identify areas that could be improved through the use of emerging innovations.
