MAHATMA GANDHI (1869–1948)
The Political and Spiritual Leader

● Born in Porbandar, a town in Gujarat, West India on October 2nd 1869, in a Hindu family.
● At the age of 13 he was married to Kasturba Makhanji, a girl also aged 13.
● In 1888, he travelled to England to study law.
● In 1893, he went to South Africa for work, and stayed for 21 years.
History/backgroud
● Civil rights movement in South Africa.
● Satyagraha ('devotion to truth'), resistance to tyranny through mass nonviolent civil disobedience.
● In 1915, Gandhi returned to India.
● In 1947, Independence of India was achieved.
