What has been accomplished in Kenya is a shining exam-ple of how to bring coaching to a country/region/continent.

Using 2015 International Coaching Week as a platform, coaches in Kenya marked the growth of coaching in East Africa with three key milestones:

1. Celebrating ICF ACSTH for CDI-Africa’s Certified Workplace Coach (CWC) program

2. Graduating Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 of the CWC program

3. Inaugurating the ICF Kenya Chapter Additionally, they provided pro bono coaching in different

spaces including churches, schools and workplaces.

ICF Accreditation CDI-Africa has become the first coach training organiza-tion domiciled in Eastern Africa to successfully complete the complex and rigorous coach training program accredi-tation standards established by the International Coach Federation (ICF) and achieve 91 Accredited Coach Spe-cific Training Hours (ACSTH) status, which is the high-est coach training course rating in the region. CDI-Africa is now approved to offer internationally recognized pro-fessional coach training and certification programs in all aspects of organizational/workplace coaching.

Established in 2006, and previously trading as Intellect Consulting Ltd., CDI-Africa has become a renowned leader in advancing the coaching profession and practice in the region. Besides offering internationally accredited train-ing programs, providing one-on-one leadership coaching and team coaching, the organization has a reputation for supporting organizations to develop in-house coaching and mentoring capacity and embedding transformational coaching culture in organizations.

Many people may not understand what ICF accreditation

really means. First, to be eligible for preparing a curriculum for consideration by ICF, an organization must have at least one ICF credentialed coach. Eileen Laskar, the founder of CDI-Africa, was the first to be awarded the ICF Professional

Certified Coach (PCC) credential in 2013. This prestigious credential is awarded to professional coaches with 125 hours coach specific training; 750 hours coaching experience; 10 hours

professional mentor coaching; and who pass an ICF administered coaching exam. Both PCC coaches in Kenya are CDI-Africa faculty members.

Graduation of CWC Cohorts In December 2014 the first CDI-Africa class completed coach training, which positioned CDI-Africa to complete ICF’s rigorous and complex course ap-plication form. Specially trained asses-sors reviewed CDI-Africa’s program

and approval was granted in March 2015. Prior to CDI-Africa’s accredita-tion, coach training programs delivered in Kenya were through franchising or partnership with coach training organi-

zations domiciled abroad.Graduates of CDI-Africa’s accredited program will have met the coach train-ing requirement to become full ICF members, and eligible for ICF’s Associ-ate Certified Coach (ACC) credential. To be awarded the ACC credential, gradu-ates must submit a practice log of 100 hours; receive 10 hours of professional mentor coaching by an ICF approved mentor coach, and pass an ICF coach knowledge assessment exam. The first

CDI-Africa graduation was held May 19 for the pioneer graduates of the Certified Workplace Coaching (CWC) program.

ICF Kenya Chapter Inauguration Co-founded by Jared Ouko, Eileen Las-kar and Felix Onyango, the ICF Kenya chapter is a model for other countries. From an ICF membership of five people in 2011 to over 70 members in 2015, there has been a lot of volunteer work done by these founder members with great professional support from ICF global leadership.

Like the story of the Chinese bam-boo, in which the farmer waters seem-ingly bare grounds for years before the bamboo finally shoots up, in Kenya a lot of work went unnoticed behind the scenes. Ouko and Onyango worked very hard to get the chapter legislation off the ground, while Eileen worked hard to bring ICF approved coach training and mentoring into the region thereby creating legitimate ICF mem-bership that would be foundational for the chapter.

CDI-Africa is now approved to offer inter-nationally recognized professional coach training and certification programs in all aspects of organizational/workplace coaching.

What’s Next in Kenya? The activities outlined above are geared toward positioning coaching as one of the most respected profes-sions, and Kenya as a hub for profes-sional coaching in the region. Laskar, the founder of CDI-Africa, envisions a country and a region full of qualified professional coaches in various spe-cializations including workplace, lead-ership, entrepreneurship, sales, family life coaching, etc. Any type of coaching desired will be available.

Kenya is also set to become a host to top-notch international coaches and center of mentor coaching for the re-gion. There will be numerous coaching entrepreneurs and, most importantly, coaches will influence and shape future

leadership and business success. Orga-nizations will incorporate coaching as a culture, which will positively impact performance and success of the busi-nesses. Kenya will eventually be a new exporter of coaching services in the region along with providing coaching services across the globe using the ICF global standards and network.

With various annual conferences held and partnerships forged, coaching will also support the tourism industry by combining coaching events with safaris to see the Big Five (African elephant, white/black rhinoceros, cape buffalo, African leopard and African lion), wit-nessing of the 8th wonder of the world (annual wildebeest migration) and oth-er superb tourist attractions. •

Kenya will eventually be a new exporter of coaching services in the region along with proving coaching services across the globe

using the ICF global standards.
