The YLD Year in Review

Who We Are
• VBA members who are either:• Under the age of 37 or• Licensed to practice for under three years
• Focused on service to the bar and service to the public
Our Areas of Focus for 2016
• Programmatic review• What are we doing, are we doing these things well, and
should we continue doing them?
• Structural review• How do we best support our efforts that will continue
following the conclusion of the programmatic review?
Programmatic Review
• Began 2016 with 50+ projects• Led by Jeremy Williams with assistance from past chair Elaina
Blanks-Green• Utilized questionnaire to gauge:
• Purpose of each project and level of activity for that project• If active, how so? If not, why not?
• Plans for future project activity
• Three ultimate recommendations: Keep, Tweak, or Drop
Programmatic Review - Results
• Kept 7 projects as-is• Tweaked 7 projects• Dropped 9 projects• Additional recommendations:
• Consolidated 17 regional projects into 5 statewide projects (with regional leads)
• Converted three projects into liaison positions (e.g., Lawyers Helping Lawyers representative)
Structural Review
• What structure makes the most sense for a refocused YLD?
• Led by Andrew Stockment and recent YLD alum Chris Gill• Primary goals included building depth, ensuring
uniformity across projects, and promoting continuity

• Changes to names of our Executive Committee and Executive Council• Executive Committee Executive Board• Executive Council Leadership Council
• Defined terms for members of Executive Board• Uniform leadership structure for each project
• Chair and Chair-Elect, also with defined terms• Rosters of members involved in each project

• Large and small project models• Addition of reps to substantive law sections, LPMD to
Leadership Council• Specific process created for bringing new projects online• Renaming our Spring and Fall Meetings
• And communicating that they are open to all of our members

Fall Meeting Reimagined
• First meeting following adoption of recommendations from programmatic and structural reviews
• Designed to allow members to limit costs by making a day trip to Charlottesville
• Focus on increasing the value proposition for employers
Fall Meeting Reimagined
• Full day of programming, beginning at 9 a.m.• Three hours of CLE programming, including 1.5 hours of
ethics, weeks before the Oct. 31 deadline• Nationally known keynote speaker, Slate’s Dahlia Lithwick• Panel discussion of four lawyer-legislators to conclude the
afternoon
Fall Meeting Reimagined
• For the first time, charged a modest registration fee for a YLD meeting• $50/member for 3 CLE hours plus food (light breakfast, lunch, and
dinner)• $100/non-members, but fee waived if you joined the VBA for 2017
• The result: our best turnout in years!

YLD Financial Goals for 2016 and Beyond
• Increasing non-dues revenue through sponsorships and meeting fees
• Cultivating YLD members as current and future Foundation patrons
• Managing expenses for ongoing projects

• “A Spotlight on Veterans’ Legal Issues” hosted in conjunction w/ Legal Services of Northern Virginia
• Regent LSC’s Holiday Toy Drive and networking social• Addition of new committee focused on CLE programming
