MURDER IN THE CITY

ROLL CALL – THE CRIMEHello, students! We are doing something extra in this class. It’s totally optional, but should be a lot of fun. You will notice, in each week’s discussion board, there is a discussion thread labeled “Roll Call.” Each week, there will be a piece of an in-depth investigation, where you will be playing the part of a police officer trying to solve the crimes… This criminal case will run the entire 8-week length of the entire course. To solve the entire puzzle, you will need to check in at “Roll Call” and do the task that is directed at you. By week 8, you will have the entire investigation solved… check out week 1 to get an idea of what is expected of you, if you wish to participate. This scenario is based on a real-life series of true crimes, so I promise you, it might seem like it’s out of a movie, but this actually happened…

ROLL CALL WEEK ONEYou arrive at Roll Call at 2 pm, since you are working a 2-10pm shift, and you Sergeant tells you that there has been a homicide in your “beat.” It just happened, and the dispatcher assigns the call to you. You get on your police radio, and the dispatcher tells you that there is a white male who has been shot in the chest, in the middle of the road at 1234 Hill Street. She tells you that EMS is in route, but they are “staging” nearby, waiting for you to tell them that the scene is safe. You know this area, you drive past the small, older houses and restaurants that make up this street in a well-known Italian area of town. The kind of place where everyone knows everyone and people drive from all over the city to eat at the restaurants. When you arrive, you see a white male lying in the road, on his back, and see eight other people, all potential witnesses, and suspects, standing around. You see if you can help the victim, and advise the dispatcher to send in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to your location.

What did you bring with you to the crime scene?

Latex gloves, crime scene tape, evidence bags, flashlight, camera, witness statements, my lunch, and my dog (Rookie) because he loves crime scenes. Latex gloves, crime scene tape, evidence bags, flashlight, camera, witness statements, my police radio, and my duty weapon.

Latex gloves, crime scene tape, evidence bags, flashlight, camera, witness statements, my lunch, and my neighbor, Fred, because he wants to be cop and has never been to a crime scene.

CORRECT – GOOD JOBYou have arrived on scene what should you do first? All of these things, and more, get done at a homicide scene. Place these in the order you think they should be done from the most important to the least.

1. Ask another officer to take the information from the witnesses

2. Collect evidence

3. Secure the scene

4. Photograph the scene

5. Have dispatch send the homicide detectives

6. Call your sergeant

Select which order is correct: Stop at Starbucks to get some coffee, request homicide detectives, secure the scene, photograph the scene, collect evidence, have an officer collect witness information, call your sergeant. Photograph the scene, collect the evidence, identify witnesses, make contact with police officers on scene, call the sergeant to see if he will bring you breakfast on his way to the scene, and request homicide detectives. Secure the scene, have another officer on scene get witness information, request homicide detectives, call your sergeant, photograph the scene, collect evidence.
