Slips, Trips, and FallsAlmost 40% of all construction accident injuries and fatalities are caused by falls. Improper scaffolding, poor maintenance of work platforms and floors, overhanging of steel bars, unprotected or elevated surface openings and improper use of ladders are generally responsible for the most serious and deadly falls. Proper safety training and protective equipment, such as harnesses, can be greatly reduce the amount of falls at construction sites.

Brain injuriesMore than 10% of all injuries and deaths at construction sites can be attributed to other objects such as moving vehicles, masonry walls, falling tools and other objects being struck. Brain injuries, as well as head, neck and back injuries, are common in construction accidents caused by an object being struck. Injuries of this nature may make a construction worker unable to work for an extended period, or leave them permanently disabled.

Electrocution; getting Hit by Heavy or Moving ObjectsElectrocution injuries caused by construction workers coming into contact with high voltage wires are responsible for almost nine per cent of serious accidents in the construction industry. Lack of ground fault, improper use of electrical wires and components, and electrical shock and burns may leave a worker with amputated limbs, scarring and disfigurement, and sudden death.

Getting Caught in Between ObjectsThe final aspect of the fatal four happens when construction workers are wedged between objects. Almost three per cent of all construction injuries and deaths occur when workers are stuck between objects that are poorly placed or incorrectly maintained. Unsafe access/egress and spoil-pile placement, as well as poorly maintained trench and protective equipment, are the main causes of these construction accidents.

Steps to Take if InjuredIt is imperative for construction workers to report and immediately address the injuries suffered at the construction site. Workers should seek medical attention, document the accident and report it to their employers. In addition, whenever possible, the injured construction worker must be sure to obtain witnesses to give details of the accident. It is advised that someone is taking pictures of the injury and the accident site to substantiate a claim.
