Introduction

Our group has decided to base the launch of our new TV Channel around the entertainment genre.

We decided to base it around this genre because it's one that has a wide range of different programming

and targets a wide age range for our target audience. The entertainment genre focuses on such categories as comedy, drama, light entertainment, reality and children's programming therefore it's this variety of different programming is why we

chose to focus on this genre.

Comedy

Comedy is one of the sub genres of the Entertainment genre and is popular with a wide

range of people. It's purpose is to entertain through humour and depending on the type of

comedy it is depends on what audience is targeted. For example darker comedy involving darker subjects, offensive humour and swearing is targeted at an adult audience however family

friendly sitcoms etc target the whole family.

Drama

Drama is another sub-genre of the Entertainment genre and is targeted mainly at

an older age group. Young children are not going to be entertainment by drama therefore the

programming is targeted at an adult audience. This means that on mainstream channels drama is usually on late in the schedules when children

are in bed therefore the audience is solely focused and target on adults.

Light Entertainment

Light Entertainment is a broad range of different television performances and these can include

such things as comedies, reality, verity, quiz and game shows. The target audience for light

entertainment like the entertainment genre in general is for the whole family. Most light

entertainment programmes are family friendly as they are targeting adults and young children

(parent and child).

Reality

Reality shows are a sub-genre of the entertainment genre and is usually popular with young adults.

Such shows as Big Brother and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here are usually popular with teenagers

and adults and therefore are an edgier and controversial product than light entertainment

shows. They focus on real life situations that are not scripted therefore they gain peoples interest by

placing high profile people in certain situations to see how they cope.

Children’s Programming

Another sub-genre of the entertainment genre is children's programming. The target audience of this

programming is obviously fundamentally children and therefore it is usually in the schedules in the late afternoon after school hours and before they

go to bed. However they also try to target and involve adults as well as they know a large section of the children watching the programming will be

accompanied by a parent therefore they try to make it family friendly whilst focusing most of their

targeting at young children.
