In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Colour theme:

Ways I followed conventions:

The colour theme of red, brown, orange and black, that I decided to use during my planning, is consistent within my

magazine through the use of pictures and text.

Q magazineexamples:

Dominant image on cover:

Ways I followed conventions:

The dominant image of the front cover conforms to the convention set out in music magazines, for example ‘Q’, for the purpose of displaying the main contents. The image on both my magazine and ‘Q’ magazine is of a female musician popular in the relevant genre. This attracts both males and females to read the magazine. However I have deviated from the convention of sexualising the model as I thought it was inappropriate.

Sub- images on cover:

Ways I followed conventions:

NME example:

I followed the convention of using sub-images as shown on the cover of NME. This is useful to have to show the reader what other contents are within the magazine to attract their attention and encourage them to buy it.

A range of fonts on DPS:

Ways I followed conventions:

BBC Music magazine:

I have used 2 different fonts on my double page spread; Felix Titling for the heading and the quote by the image, Minion Pro for the text written by the journalist, emboldened when it is a question, and italicised Minion Pro to show when the musician is answering the question.

Ways I followed conventions:

I have deviated from the convention of sexualising the models as I thought it was inappropriate.

Ways I challenged forms and conventions:

Due to where my college is based I could not take images of a range of ethnicities or social groups, meaning that all my pictures are of white working/middle class teenaged girls. This has the negative effect of making the magazine unrepresentative of modern society.

Having a magazine with only girls could make men feel excluded therefore discouraged to buy the magazine.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The idea of this magazine goes against the stereotype of people who enjoy classical music as it is aimed at a younger audience, rather than elderly middle and upper class members of society.

Therefore the models in my magazine are young people , making it more current, modern and appealing to the younger generations

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The make up style used on the models is natural looking and is used sparingly. It is subtle but flattering, complementing the smooth subtleness of classical music and its listeners.

The clothes worn by some of the models (for example the grey hoodie) show that the magazine doesn’t just represent the middle class audiences, but also represents the minority audience of the working class.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

A big publishing company such as IPC Group Limited as it publishes NME along with over 100 different magazine brands and is the UK’s leading consumer Magazine Producer.

They would want to distribute it to make money and because they have a knowledge of the audience, so companies may want to place advertisements in the magazine.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
