Activities Prior to Entering Government

ANDREW CHARLTON

Many may know professional economist Andrew Charlton for his work as senior economic advisor to former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, though few may not be aware of his extensive involvement with various institutions and organizations prior to the beginnings of his government service. Charlton has held numerous Directorships, written multiple publications, published numerous articles and volunteered for several nonprofit organizations during his career; activities all completed before becoming a member of the Prime Minister’s cabinet.

ANDREW CHARLTON : PROFESSIONAL ECONOMIST

DIRECTORSHIPSAndrew Charlton held his first Directorship at the University of Sydney, where he served as an elected fellow of the statutory governing body of the university from 2000 to 2001. He next held a Directorship with Oxford Investment Research, which occurred between 2005 and 2008, and enjoyed director positions with Envotec (as alternate director), Global Television and GoGundraise Pty Ltd (as Chairman between 2007 and 2008).

BOOKS

Andrew Charlton has been involved in the composition of two books during his career. The first, titled Fair Trade for All, was co-written with Joseph Stilitz, and was published by Oxford University Press in 2005. The second, titled Ozonomics, was written solely by Charlto, and was published by Random House Australia in 2007.

ARTICLESAndrew Charlton is also responsible for several notable articles throughout his career, including “Intra-Industry Foreign Direct Investment”, published in American Economic Review (world #1 ranked economic journal) in 2007, with Laura Alfaro, “Does Investment Promotion Work”, which he produced along with Nicholas Davis and was published by BE Press in 2005.

Other Charlton articles include “Aid for Trade”, a 2006 article co-written with Joseph Stiglitz and published in Aussenwirtschaft, Vol. 61, No. 2, “Common Values for the Development Round”, produced along with Joseph Stiglitz in 2004, and “A Development-Friendly Prioritization of Doha Round Proposals", with Joseph Stiglitz in March of 2005.

Andrew Charlton’s resume also includes volunteer work for several organizations, including Care International in both Yemen and Jordan in 1997, the East Timor Department of Finance in 2006 and more. Charlton also served as the Middle Common Room President at Oxford’s St. John’s College in 2003, as Junior Dean at Oxford’s Hertford College between 2003 and 2005, and as Knox Grammar School School Captain in 1996.

Charlton is the winner of the 2000 University of Sydney University Medal in Economics, and First Class Honours in Economics. He is a former winner of the John Hicks Prize and the Edgeworth Prize during his student tenure at the University of Oxford.
