WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW

BEFORE GETTING A LIPOSUCTION?

Prepared by: Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Inc.

ASK DR. CHIU:

1. WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat deposits from localized areas between the skin and muscles. Liposuction involves the use of a long metal tube, called a cannula. The cannula is connected to a powerful suction pump, and is then inserted into the preplanned location to remove the fat cells quickly.

2. WHAT BODY AREAS DOES LIPOSUCTION TARGET?

Liposuction can be used in a wide range of areas wherever the body is unable to reduce fat cells naturally. The usual areas of liposuction treatment include: abdomen, hips, thighs, waist, buttocks, chest, chin, neck, arms, back.

3. AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSUCTION?

A good candidate for liposuction is a patient who is in good health and is likely to understand the realistic expectations of this procedure . Liposuction is capable of providing patients with substantial improvement, but will never guarantee perfection. (cont. to next slide) !

3. AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSUCTION?

There is no exact age or weight requirement for patients who are good candidates of liposuction. Most liposuction patients are of average size but possess localized accumulations of fat and find Dr. Chiu’s techniques successful for long-term results. !

Liposuction is not a treatment for patients who are obese. Even if there was no other source for a patient to lose the necessary weight, liposuction would be ineffective. Liposuction is not used as a substitute for bariatric surgery or diet and exercise.

4. CAN I GET LIPOSUCTION IF I AM OBESE?

Liposuction is valid in the case where an overweight person whose weight has been stable for a year and possess issues with body fat in certain areas may be a great candidate for this procedure. It is reasonable to improve these areas where stubborn body fat of an obese patient does not produce results from other weight loss techniques.

4. WHAT OTHER ALTERNATIVES SHOULD I CONSIDER FOR LIPOSUCTION?

Although Dr. Chiu enjoys delivering excellent body contouring results, liposuction is not absolutely necessary. Patients who decide that liposuction is not absolutely for them, may consider alternatives such as:- Dieting (decreased calorie intake)- Increased physical activity- Maintaining a consistent and healthy lifestyle (Avoiding drugs and alcohol)

6. WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DO LIPOSUCTION FACILITIES POSSESS?

Cosmetic surgery should always be performed in a hospital or an office-based surgery facility that is currently accredited, state licensed or Medicare-certified. The facility should also have a safety record comparable to that of a hospital. If there is no data or information displayed by the facility regarding licensing, then they may not yet be accredited to host cosmetic surgery.

7. DOES FAT RETURN AFTER LIPOSUCTION?

If the patient maintains a healthy diet and exercise routine, the patient will not grow fat in other areas of the body, nor will fat return to the liposuction sites treated. If a patient does gain more than 10 pounds of weight after liposuction, then the fat may appear in other areas. The areas treated by lipo may develop slightly if weight gain continues.

8. WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION RECOVERY LIKE?

When the procedure is complete, patients are asked to follow Dr. Chiu’s post-surgery instructions carefully to ensure successful healing. Depending on the extent of the surgery, patient’s age, general health, and the type of physical activity of the patient’s job, your recovery time may be swift or lengthy. (cont. to the next page)

8. WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION RECOVERY LIKE?

Post-surgery pain decreases after 3 to 4 days, after which most patients may return to their desk job. However, Dr. Chiu can help you determine when it is a good time to return to full physical activity without disrupting the healing after liposuction.

9. HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST?

After liposuction removes the unwanted fat cells, those fat cells are gone forever. The body’s contour is improved to its ideal shape and in proportion with the rest of the body after healing and skin retention is complete. 9. HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST?

rest of the body after healing and skin retention is complete. Although liposuction will not prevent the remainder of the body from gaining weight, leading a healthy lifestyle will maintain permanent results. As long as the patient follows their surgeon’s instructions and follows a balanced diet and fitness regimen the body will not lose its new shape.

10. HOW MANY LIPOSUCTION TREATMENTS SHOULD I HAVE?

The number of liposuction procedures depends on the nature and problem areas of the current situation of the patient. On average, two treatments set at a few weeks apart may be necessary for patients with multiple problem zones of fat cells. It is also a reminder that liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss surgery or diet and exercise. In these cases, Dr. Chiu can recommend another solution before undergoing multiple treatments.
